Name and Nickname
His full name was Ozymandias
Ramses al-Ma'at-Meri-Amun,
and the nickname
"Ozymandias" was later used in
Percy Bysshe Shelley's poem of
the same name.
Major Battles
Ramses II led Egypt in several
military campaigns, including
the famous ones against the
Hittites. The most notable was
the Battle of Kadesh,
considered one of the largest
confrontations of that time
.
Treaty of Kadesh
After the Battle of Kadesh,
Ramses II and the Hittite king,
Hattušili III, signed a peace
treaty, considered one of the
earliest known diplomatic
documents in history.
Impressive Monuments
Ramses II left behind an
impressive number of
monuments, including temples,
statues, and obelisks. The Abu
Simbel temple, built in his
honor, is one of the most
famous and imposing in Egypt.
Long Reign
Ramses II ruled for an
incredibly long period,
approximately 66 years, making
him one of the longest-reigning
pharaohs of Egypt.
Extended Family
With around 200 wives and
concubines, as well as over 100
children, Ramses II had an
extensive family, and its
influence in politics and society
was significant.
Tomb and Mummy
Ramses II was buried in the
Valley of the Kings, and his
mummy was discovered in
1881. Although the mummy has
been affected by time, it has
been the subject of extensive
studies.
The pharaoh's wives
The 200 wives and concubines of the Egyptian
pharaoh gave him 96 sons and 60 daughters. His
first and favorite wife, and also his queen, was
Nefertari. The pharaoh married her when they
were both 15, despite her being his half-sister.
Their marriage was successful, with Ramses
enchanted by her beauty, and she gave birth to
six children, four boys and two girlsa

In 1974, the corpse of Ramesses Il was sent on a
flight to Paris for preservation and maintenance
work. Since French law requires every person,
living or dead, to fly with a valid passport,
Egypt was forced to issue a passport to the
Pharaoh over 3,000 years after his death
