Understanding Hyper-V Virtualization Basics

Hyper-V is a virtualization technology that allows multiple operating systems to run on a single physical server. It creates virtual machines that have virtual processors, memory, storage, and networking. Key features include live migration which moves running virtual machines between servers with little downtime, and storage migration which moves virtual hard disks. Hyper-V is commonly used for testing, development, disaster recovery, and scaling workloads.

WHAT IS HYPER - V

• To start off, here’s a basic Hyper-V

definition: Hyper-V is a Microsoft technology
that allows users to create virtual computer
environments, and run and manage multiple
operating systems on a single physical server.
But to completely understand what Hyper-V
is, you need to first understand virtualization.
WHAT IS VIRTUALIZATION

• used multiple physical servers, each with one

primary function—for instance, a mail server
dedicated solely to handling outgoing and
incoming emails. Buying a physical server
meant you also had to choose the appropriate
CPU and RAM to go along with it. Often,
organizations purchased too much or too little
of these resources,
HYPER – V BASICS

• Host machine
• • Guest virtual machine
• • Virtual network
• • Virtual hard disk (VHD)
• • Virtual switch
FEATURES

• Computing environment - A Hyper-V virtual machine includes the same basic parts as a physical
computer, such as memory, processor, storage, and networking.
• Optimization - Each supported guest operating system has a customized set of services and drivers,
called integration services, that make it easier to use the operating system in a Hyper-V virtual
machine.
• Portability - Features such as live migration, storage migration, and import/export make it easier to
move or distribute a virtual machine.
• Security - Secure boot and shielded virtual machines help protect against malware and other
unauthorized access to a virtual machine and its data.
VIRTUALIZATION TYPES

• Server Virtualization
• Network Virtualization
• Desktop Virtualization
LIVE MIGRATION

• What is Hyper-V Live Migration?

• Hyper-V Live Migration is the possibility to migrate any of your Virtual Machines between your
physical Hyper-V Servers.
• Hyper-V Live Migration works to a Hyper-V Server Standalone or a Hyper-V Cluster Node without
any downtime (only in some cases) over the network.
LIVE MIGRATION TYPES

• Shared-Nothing Live Migration

• Live Migration
• Quick Migration
• Storage Live Migration
PROS

• Following are the pros of using Hyper-V:

• The least possible device driver management
• Easy-to-install new server roles
• shorter setup time
• Fast updates and maintenance
CONS

• Here are some cons of using Hyper-V

• Parent OS crash can crash all the VMs
• Overhead of frequent security and OS
updates.
• Prior to using Hyper-V primary OS must be
installed.
• Service templates don’t have much support
USED FOR WHAT

• • Develop and test applications, operating systems and upgrades

• • Easily scale your IT infrastructure to accommodate larger workloads
• • Save or migrate data from a legacy system.
• • Improve business continuity
