2.1 Operating System Services
 Operating systems provide an environment for
execution of programs and services to programs
and users
 One set of operating-system services provides
functions that are helpful to the user:
 User interface - Almost all operating systems
have a user interface (UI).
Varies between Command-Line (CLI), Graphics
User Interface (GUI)
 Program execution - The system must be able to
load a program into memory and to run that
program, end execution, either normally or
abnormally (indicating error)
 I/O operations - A running program may require
I/O, which may involve a file or an I/O device

 File-system manipulation - The file system is of particular
interest. Programs need to read and write files and
directories, create and delete them, search them, list file

sharing
 Resource allocation - When multiple users or multiple
jobs running concurrently, resources must be allocated
to each of them

 Accounting - To keep track of which users use how
much and what kinds of computer resources
 Protection and security - The owners of information

User Operating System Interface - GUI
 User-friendly desktop metaphor interface
 users employ a mouse-based window and menu system
 Icons represent files, programs, actions, etc
 Various mouse buttons over objects in the interface
cause various actions (provide information, options,
execute function, open directory (known as a folder)
 Invented at Xerox PARC, early 1970s
 GUI widespread with Apple Macintosh computers in the
1980s.
 Many systems now include both CLI and GUI
interfaces
 Microsoft Windows is GUI with CLI “command” shell
 Apple Mac OS X is “Aqua” GUI interface with UNIX kernel
 Unix and Linux have CLI with optional GUI interfaces

Choice of Interface
 The choice of whether to use a CLI or GUI interface is mostly
one of personal preference.
 System administrators who manage computers who have deep
knowledge of a system frequently use the CLI. For them, it is
more efficient, giving them faster access to the activities they
need to perform.
 On some systems, only a subset of system functions is available
via the GUI,
GUI leaving the less common tasks to those who use
CLI
 CLI interfaces usually make repetitive tasks easier, in part
because they have their own programmability.
 Most Windows users are happy to use the Windows GUI
environment and almost never use the MS-DOS shell interface.
 Historically, Mac OS has not provided a command-line interface,
always requiring its users to interface with the operating system
using its GUI.
 However, with the release of Mac OS X the operating system
now provides both a Aqua interface and a command-line
interface.

2.3 System Calls
 Provide an interface to the services made by an OS
 Typically written in a high-level language (C or C++)
 Accessed by programs via a high-level Application
Programming Interface (API) not as direct system
call use
 Three most common APIs are Win32 API for
Windows, POSIX API for POSIX-based systems
(including virtually all versions of UNIX, Linux, and
Mac OS X), and Java API for the Java virtual
machine (JVM)
 For most programming languages, the run-time
support system (a set of functions built into
libraries included with a compiler) provides a
system call interface that serves as the link to
system calls

System Call Implementation
 Typically, a number associated with each system
call
 System-call interface maintains a table indexed
according to these numbers
 The system call interface invokes the intended
system call in OS kernel and returns status of the
system call and any return values
 The caller need know nothing about how the
system call is implemented
 Just needs to obey API and understand what OS
will do as a result call
 Most details of OS interface hidden from
programmer by API
 Managed by run-time support library (set of functions
built into libraries included with compiler)

System Call Parameter Passing
 Often, more information is required than simply
identity of desired system call
 Exact type and amount of information vary according to OS
and call
 Three general methods used to pass parameters to
the OS
1. Simplest: pass the parameters in registers
 In some cases, may be more parameters than registers
2. Parameters stored in a block, or table, in memory,
memory
and address of block passed as a parameter in a
register
 This approach taken by Linux and Solaris
3. Parameters placed, or pushed, onto the stack by
the program and popped off the stack by the OS

2.5 System Programs
 Provide a convenient environment for program
development and execution
 Some of them are simply user interfaces to system calls;

 File management - Create, delete, copy, rename, print, dump,


list, and generally manipulate files and directories

 Status information
 Some ask the system for info - date, time, amount of
available memory, disk space, number of users
 Others provide detailed performance, logging, and
debugging information
 Typically, these programs format and print the output to
the terminal or other output devices
 Some systems implement a registry - used to store and
retrieve configuration information

2.6 Operating System Design and Implementation
 The first problem in designing a system is to define goals and
specifications.
 At the highest level, the design of the system will be affected by
the choice of hardware and the type of the system
 Beyond this highest design level, the requirements may be much
harder to specify. The requirements can, however, be divided
into two basic groups:
 User goals – operating system should be convenient to use,
use easy to

 Mechanisms determine how to do something,
policies decide what will be done
 The separation of policy from mechanism is a
very important principle, it allows maximum
flexibility if policy decisions are to be changed
later (example – CPU timer)
 Policies are likely to change across places or
over time.
 A general mechanism insensitive to changes in
policy would be more desirable.

Implementation
 Early operating systems were written in assembly
language. Now most are written in a higher-level language.
 A mix of languages: Lowest levels in assembly, Main body
in C, Systems programs in C, C++, scripting languages as
PERL, shell scripts
 The advantages of using a higher-level language: the code
can be written faster, is more compact, and is easier to
understand and debug, easier to port, improvements in
compiler technology will improve the entire operating
system by simple recompilation.
 The disadvantages are reduced speed and increased
storage requirements.
 Although operating systems are large, only a small amount
of the code is critical to high performance; the interrupt
handler, I/O manager, memory manager, and CPU
scheduler.
 Emulation can allow an OS to run on non-native hardware

 A common approach is to partition the task into
small components, or modules, rather than

Layered Approach
 The operating system is divided
into a number of layers (levels),
each built on top of lower layers.
The bottom layer (layer 0), is the
hardware; the highest (layer N) is
the user interface.
 With modularity, layers are
selected such that each uses
functions (operations) and services
of only lower-level layers
 The main advantage of the layered
approach is simplicity of
construction and debugging.

Microkernel System Structure
 It structures the operating system by removing all nonessential
components from the kernel and implementing them as system and
user-programs.

services should remain in the kernel and which should be implemented
in user space.
 Typically, however, microkernels provide minimal process and memory
management,

 The Apple Mac OS X operating system uses a hybrid
structure.

 Developed by Open Handset Alliance (mostly Google)
 Android runs on a variety of mobile platforms and is open-sourced
 Android is similar to iOS in that it is a layered stack of software
that provides a rich set of frameworks for developing mobile

 At the bottom of this software stack is the Linux kernel,

it has been modified by Google and is currently outside the normal
distribution of Linux releases.
 Linux is used primarily for process, memory, and device-driver

2.9 Operating System Generation
 Operating systems are designed to run on any of a class of machines;

 Once this information is determined, it can be used in several ways:

starts it
