Biogeochemical

Cycles
Cycle of the Biosphere
• Our biosphere contains all of the minerals,
water, oxygen, nitrogen, carbon, and other
chemical materials necessary for life.
• The biosphere is a closed system (no in and out)
• Materials must be recycled
• Solid, liquid and gas
Nitrogen Cycle
• There is abundance of nitrogen in the atmosphere. It
Makes up 80% of the total volume of air.
• Forms:

Nitrate (NO )
3 Ammonia (NH 3 )

Ammonium (NH 4 ) Nitric oxide (NO)

Nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) Nitrous oxide (N 2 O)

Nitrogen Cycle
• The process by which nitrogen from the atmosphere is
changed into nitrate (NO3) is called nitrogen fi xation.
• Ammonia can be also produced from the decay of organic
organism and is called ammonifi cation.
• The conversion of ammonia to nitrate is called
nitrifi cation.
• Nitrogen assimilation is the process by which nitrogen
is incorporated intro protein molecules by plants. Their
waste returns nitrogen to the soil as urea and other
compounds that are converted to ammonia.
Nitrogen Cycle
• Denitrifi cation is the process by which some bacteria
cause nitrogen to return to the atmosphere by breaking
down ammonia into the soil.

• Rhizobium sp., Azotobacter, Anabaena, Cyanobacteria,

Azospirillum, Nitrobacter, etc.
