Transport in Plants

Amina Maqsood
Transpiration
• A driving force to absorb water from the soil
• Transpiration stream
• Transpiration is the loss of water vapour from plant leaves by
evaporation of water at the surfaces of the mesophyll cells followed
by the diffusion of water vapour through the stomata.
Importance of transpiration
• Maximum mineral absorption
• Help leaves to cool down when intense light in day
• Inevitable consequence of photosynthesis
Role of Stomata
• Humidity
• Plant water conditions
• Light intensity
• Carbon dioxide concentration
Rate of transpiration
• Light intensity
• Humidity
• Air movement
• Temperature
Role of Xylem and Cohesion tension theory
• Suction can pull water up to 10 feet not above this
