BLOAT DISEASE
Example of Bloat in Cattle
DEF:

 Bloat is a digestive disorder that results from the accumulation

of excessive gas within the rumen.
 Bloat is a metabolic disease.
 Pressure builds up in the rumen causing an obvious swelling on
the left side of the body.
 Gas(carbon dioxide and methane)are trapped in small bubbles in
this foam in the rumen and the animal can not belch up the gas.
CAUSE:

 Dietary factors; such as Intake of pasture with high legume

content, When these legumes are rapidly fermented, they produce a
stable foam that traps gas.
 Physical factors: such as foreign body or tumor pressing against
the esophagus can obstruct the normal passage of gas and lead to
bloat. :
 Individual Factors: Some animals may be more prone to bloat due
to factors, such as genetics or physiological differences.
 Management Factors: Insufficient water intake or limited access to
water can also lead to bloat.
SYMPTOMS:

 Distended abdomen
 Discomfort or restlessness
 Labored breathing
 Decreased appetite
 Excessive salivation
 Frequent attempts to vomit
 Weakness
 Changes in fecal output
TREATMENT:

 For animals with bloat that is not severe, give them a bloat
medication by mouth(stop bloat, burp or bloat guard ), give
small amount of medicine at a time slowly.
 Also tie a rope across the animal mouth and tie it around the
head to make the animal chew the rope to stimulate it to belch.
 When bloat is severe and the animal is distressed, puncture the
skin so that the gases escape out of the rumen. Use a knife or
any sharp thing (best thing to use is a trocar and canula)
PREVENTION:

 Prevention of bloat centers on correct feeding practices.

 By using anti bloat capsules (Poloxalene)
 Feed Animals on dry hay before turning into pasture legume
 Implement grazing strips
 Restrict pasture intake by limiting the grazing time.
 Avoid grazing of Animals when they is moisture on legume pasture
