Let’s look at some examples of sentences with but and
however:
• Alan wants to move to the city, but the houses are too expensive.

• Alan wants to move to the city.

Remember...
You can use but and however to contrast an idea with a previous one.
part 1 = meaning: I like living in the city centre,
part 2 = meaning: but I don’t like living in a flat.
or
part 1 = meaning: I don’t live in the countryside.
part 2 = meaning: However, I think it’s great!
