MAJOR INSECT

POLLINATORS
WHAT IS PILLINATION?

Pollination is the act of transferring pollengrains

from the male anther of a flower to the female
stigma. Polination in pants is carried out by the help
of many insects. Through pollination plants prepare
their food.
MAJOR INSECT
POLLINATORS
1) Bees
2) Moths
3) Butterflis
4) Beetles
5) Flies
BEES
• They are major among insect pollinators
• No other groups of insects is of more benefit to
humans than bees
• Bees pollination increases the quantity and quality of
crops
• Major crops pollinated by bees are apple, citrus,
tomato, apricot, mango, grape, peach etc...
• Major bees working as insect pollinators
• 1) domesticated species
• Apis mellifera L, A cerana indica F
• 2) wild species
• A dorsata, A florea
• Bees increases the production of crops
MOTHS
• Moths are more efficient pollinators at night than
day flying pollinators such as bees
• They are able to pollinate the flowers more quickly
• They are active at nights
• Crops pollinated by moths are
• 1) morning gory
• 2) tobacco
• 3) yucca
• 4) gardenia etc..
• Moths interact with 47 different plant species more
than either bees Or butterflies
YUCCA MOTH
• One of the extraordinary partnership between an insect
and the plant that it pollinates is that of the yucca and
the yucca moth
• This is because the yucca larvae eat yucca seeds, while
the yucca Flowers are soleley dependent on the
pronuba moths for pollination
•Moth pollination
BUTTERFLIES
• Butterflies are very active during day and visit a
variety of wild flowers
• Butterflies are lesa efficient than bees at moving
pollen between plants
• They donot pick up much pollen on their bodies
and lack specialized structure for collecting it.
• Of the four families of butterflies papillionidae
are the effective pollinators
• Butterfly play a major role in pollinaring cotton
plant
BEETLES
• Beetles were among the first insects to visit
flowers and they remain essential pollinators
today
• Beetles will eat their way through petals and
other floral parts
• They are important pollinators for ancient species
such as mangolias and spice blush

• Major types of Beetles acting as pollinators are

• 1) soldier beetles 2) scarabs 3) long horned
• Beetle 4) sap beetes etc...
BEETLE POLLINATION
FLIES
• Flies make up a large proportion of wild
pollinators

• Fleis are critical pollinators in both natural and

agricultural systems
• Many ot them specialy visit
flowers such as syrphid flies Or
flower flies

• Mango is a major crop

pollinated by flies they increases
the yield of mango
• Crops pollinated by flies are
oilseed rape, sweet peppers and
straw berries
