What is reading?

• Reading is an interactive process in which the reader construct a


meaningful representation of a text using effective reading strategies.

• The process of making meaning out of written text.


Reading comprehension
• Comprehension is the process of eliciting and making meaning
through instruction and involvement with written language.

• Comprehension is a process in which readers make meaning by


interacting with text through the combination of prior knowledge and
previous experience, information in the text, and the views of readers
related to the text.
Kinds of reading:
Reading is divided into two parts
• Extensive
Exposing learners to large quantity of meaningful and fascinating
materials and activities will have a significant impact on learners’
knowledge of second language.
• Intensive
Reading to be familiars with strategies of writing, find the meaning of
words, learn the sentences structure. It has been considered as important
instrument for developing reading comprehension.
Models of reading process:
• Bottom-up
focus is in smaller unites from letters to the sentences
• Top-down
Readers apply their previous knowledge to relate with a text and to
connect these to new information found in the text in order to
understand it.
• Interactive
Combination of both top-down and bottom up

• Mental representation:
Understanding of what we have read

• Content literacy
The ability to read, understand, and learn

• Cognitive process
Application of both syntactic and semantic rules together with the
activation of more particular pervious knowledge automatically.
