Definition; Inhibiton of sensation.

According to Oxford dictionary;

Anaesthesia refers to insensitivity to pain sensation especially as artificially
induced by the administration of gases or the injection of drugs before surgical procedure.
 PRE ANAESTHETIC VISIT
The process of clinical assessment that preceds the delivery of anesthesia for
surgical procedures.
ie;patient’s consultation prior to anaesthesia.

AIMS OF PRE ANAESTHETIC VISIT;

1. To assess the patient’s medical status
2. To plan appropriate anaesthesia management
 Steps during Pre anaesthetic Visit,
The anaesthetists should;
ASA physical status classification system
 PRE MEDICATIONS
Administration of drugs prior to anaesthesia so as to make the anaesthesia safer
for the patient.
It ensure comfort to the patient and to minimize adverse effects of anaesthesia.

Aims;
• Relief of anxiety and facilitate smooth induction
• Amnesia for pre and post operative events
• Potentiate actions of anaesthetics,so less doses is needed
• Anti emetic effects extending to postoperative period
• Decrease secretions and vagal stimulation caused by anaesthetics
• Decrease acidity and volume of gastric juice to prevent reflux and
aspiration pneumonia.
 DRUGS USED FOR PRE ANAESTHETIC MEDICATION
• Anti-anxiety drugs;
Examples; Benzodiazepines
• Sedative-hypnotics;
Examples; Promethazine
• Opioids analgesics;
Examples; Morphine,Pethidine/ im
used one hour before surgery
• Anticholinergics;
Examples; Atropine and glycopyrrolate
• Antiemetics;
Examples; Metoclopramide,Domperidone,Ondansentron
• Drugs reducing acid secretion; Ranitidine,Famotinide,ppi like omeprazole
