NEW YORK CITY

New York City is the


largest city in the USA. It is
located on the Atlantic coast in
southeastern part of the State of
New York.
The city was founded in
1624 by the Dutch colonists, and
was called New Amsterdam.

In 1664, the British


captured the city and renamed it
New York in honor of the
initiator of capture – the Duke of
York.
The city consists of five
boroughs: the Bronx, Brooklyn,
Queens, Manhattan and Staten
Island. The city area is 1214.9
km².
The Statue of
Liberty symbolizes friendship
between nations. At the end of the
19th century French people gave
it as a gift to the USA.
Broadway Theatre is a dream
place for those, who love
theatrical performances.
Broadway has won the love of
millions of city visitors.
Geographically, it is situated
in Manhattan.
Times Square is the heart
of New York. Statistics show that
it is the world’s most visited
attraction. Every year, more than
35 million people come to see the
lights of Times Square.
Rockefeller Center holds
one of the most beautiful
ensembles [ɑ:n'sɑ:mb(ə)l]
of buildings in the world.
Being located in Midtown
Manhattan, it is declared to
be a National Historic
Landmark. This complex
of 19 commercial buildings
was erected by Rockefeller
family in the 20th century.
Empire State
Building is
another
architectural
wonder located
in Manhattan. It’s
a 103-story
skyscraper,
which was the
tallest in the
world for nearly
40 years after its
completion
American Museum of
Natural History is also
situated in New York. It has
been founded in 1869 and
today it holds more than 30
million species of plants,
animals, fossils, minerals, etc.
Metropolitan Museum of
Art is an iconic museum
worth visiting. It houses more
than two million works of art
from around the world. It is
considered to be the largest art
museum in the country and
the tenth largest in the world.
Visitors of New York enjoy quiet picnics or boat rides in Central Park. It’s the
most visited park in the United States.
