FACIAL NERVE AND IT’S

DIORDERS
BY
JOSHITA ROSARY S
INTRODUCTION
The Facial Nerve, or Cranial Nerve VII, is a key
player in controlling facial movements and
expressions. Originating in the brainstem's pons,
it navigates a complex path through the facial
canal, emerging from the skull through the
stylomastoid foramen. Primarily responsible for
innervating facial muscles, it enables expressions
like smiling and frowning. Additionally, it
influences taste in the anterior two-thirds of
the tongue and regulates tear and
salivary glands.
ANATOMY OF THE FACIAL NERVE
• Originates in the pons of
the brainstem.

• Travels through the facial canal

and exits the skull through the
stylomastoid foramen.

• Innervates the muscles of

facial expression.
FUNCTIONS OF THE FACIAL NERVE
• Controls facial expressions.

• Involved in the sense of

• taste for the anterior
• two-thirds of the tongue.

• Regulates tear and salivary

• glands.
DISORDERS OF THE FACIAL NERVE
Bell's Palsy :
• Sudden weakness or paralysis of facial muscles.
• Often affects one side of the face.
• Cause unknown, possibly linked to viral infections.
Ramsay Hunt Syndrome :
• Result of the varicella-zoster virus.
• Presents with facial paralysis, ear pain, and a rash in the ear or mouth.
Bell's Palsy Ramsay Hunt Syndrome
FACIAL NERVE TUMORS
• Tumors can compress or
damage the facial nerve.

•Manifests as gradual
facial weakness.
TRAUMA AND INJURY
•Physical trauma or injury
can lead to facial nerve
damage.

• Fractures, surgical
procedures,or accidents may
be contributing factors.
DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT

•Clinical examination and imaging (MRI, CT)

for diagnosis.
•Treatment varies based on the underlying
cause.
•Medications, physical therapy, and surgery
may be recommended.
CONCLUSION
•The Facial Nerve is vital for facial
expressions and functions.

•Disorders can impact facial movement,

expressions, and overall quality of life.

•Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment are

crucial for better outcomes.
