Morpho-biological characteristics of football
athletes
A constant search of a greater effectiveness has changed the
game features. This evolution has had implications either over the
strength relation of the different performance factors or over the
energetical/functional plan.

The pace, motion density, corporeal contact and the complexity

of the game are increasingly elevated and alternated.

In an inverse proportion it has been noticed a gradual and

important reduction on the real gametime (from Mexico 70' to
Italy 90' the gametime roughly diminished ten minutes).
Modern football demands a strong and fast player, capable of
winning resistances and standing weight, and, at the same time, a
player capable of maintaining high performance levels even in
fatigue, during the game.
The modern football player must have strength, speed, resistance
and flexibility combined in a way so that his performance be
effective. Then, the player does not have to be as fast as a
professional runner, does not have to be as strong as a
weightlifter, does not have to be as flexible as a gymnast, nor
does he have to be as resistant as a marathon runner.

That is why nowadays we must have a more complete sense of
analysis at the moment of scouting a player or assembling a team,
these days we need to know if there is quality, but, above all, we
need to know if there is competitiveness along with such quality,
which places us in a similar level of the opponents'.
Football is still, from the physical angle, the most democratic
sport among all the others, since talent prevails over all factors in
sporting results. But, of course, football has been going through
modifications in its gameplay and in its physical aspects
throughout the times.

Football-applied training
The intensity of a football match depends, mostly, on
the number of short non-lactic efforts, which gradually
increase as time goes by. This means that 60% of the
athletes' muscle fybers are fast, an identical proportion
found in 800m runners. The footballers' muscles are
more conditioned for speed rather than for slow
movements
The effort performed in a football match is incessant
and of high intensity. The players have to perform
efforts of unpredictable and randomic sequence, with
different intensity and duration, separated by intervals
characterised by different features and durations.
Those intervals in a general sense do not allow
complete recovery

(Pre-competitive preparation)

Strength
Speed
Aerobic Training
 4 series, from 8 to 12 minutes, running at the anaerobic
threshold speed

• 6 series of 1000 m, running 1 km/h above the anaerobic

threshold
• 5 series of 1000 m, running 2 km/h above the anaerobic
threshold
Anaerobic Training
(For U17 – save some points, U20 and Professionals)

• 10 sprints of 300m in 50s (cyclical)

• 8 sprints of 300 m in 52 s (non-cyclical)
• Anaerobic series 1 x 1 (10 s of activity and
10 s of rest)
• Anaerobic series with cyclical accelerations
(series around the football field)
Strength Training

• Training in muscular apparatus with lifts

50% and 70% of the maximum
• Training which combines coordination and
traction runs
(For U17, U20 and professionals)
Speed Training

• Coordination training
(Important for U15)
• Training based on a combo of jumps and
accelerations
(with a few saves for U15)
• Training based on a combo of
coordination and accelerations

Training in muscular apparatus with lifts
between 65% and 85% of the maximum
(For U20 and Professionals)
• Training based on a combo of coordination
and traction runs
(For U17, U20 and Professionals)
• Jump training with lifts
(For U20 and Professionals) / (it is not used very often)
Speed Training
• Coordination training
(Important for U15)
• Training based on a combo of jumps and
accelerations
(With a few saves for U15)
• Training based on a combo of coordination and
accelerations
• Training of traction runs in the same direction of the
player, and with fybers recruitment
(For U20 and professionals)
The effort in football has very
peculiar characteristics. The
preparation and the training (drill)
will have to be, and are already
being, more specific through the
years
The effort performed in a football match is incessant
and of high intensity. The players have to perform
efforts of unpredictable and randomic sequence, with
different intensity and duration, separated by intervals
characterised by different features and durations.
Those intervals in a general sense do not allow
complete recovery
How should the specific endurance
training be?
Specific endurance training

• Small and big tactical games
