Custody Business Overview
• Custody service deals with holding and administering Securities (SC) on behalf of the third
parties. In the current financial market trend, custody has evolved into a complex business,
which is no longer characterised by just physical book keeping of securities. Custody services
are provided by a variety of intermediaries.
• If an entity is both an investment manager and custodian, the information from the portfolio
manager and customer can be collated and provided easily as all the information relating to the
portfolio (like performance details and valuation) are held internally.
• If the custody is external, the portfolio managers must get accurate information about all the
positions or assets under management for portfolio analysis, performance monitoring and
providing consolidated valuations. An operational framework is mandatory for the user to
provide consolidated reporting and monitoring of the portfolio performance, considering the
external positions held as well. Portfolio managers need access to the external positions to
perform the portfolio analysis and take effective investment decisions.
