Invasive Species Research Project Guide

The document outlines a lesson plan on invasive species that has students research an invasive species and create a wanted poster providing the name, damage caused, description, origin, areas affected, and prevention methods. Students will develop research, creativity, and time management skills. The lesson also includes a critique for the wanted posters.

Unit 3: Adaptations of

Organisms
Term 2 2022/2023

Teacher : Ms. Nahla Ahmmad

Invasive Species-Most Wanted Poster FA Crit-D
Time-50min
• Students do research on an invasive species of their choice
• Create a wanted poster that includes facts about the species and what they would
be “wanted” for.
• Your Un-Wanted Poster should include the following:
• Name of the Invasive Species (both common and scientific name)
• Damage caused by the invasive species (this is the crime)
• Pictures & Description
• Where did it come from? (Where does it live normally?)
• Where in the world is it a problem?
• Prevention Methods (what can we do to get rid or prevent the invasion?

ATL Skills- Research, Collaboration, Time management

Evolution by natural selection
IB

• Who is Darwin?
- A British Naturalist Darwin's Observations
- Theory of evolution
1- All organisms is a species show variation
- What are the observations that Genes- inheritance- variation
Darwin based his theory on? Example : chicks
https://youtu.be/-NFfSLlCawE
https://youtu.be/aG8fMxaSSNw
IB

2- some characteristics are inherited

Inheritance Can students understand adaptation within population of
birds
Trait
Favorable characteristics
Beaks Natural selection
• Relate adaptation and type of beak Students can deduce that favorable characteristics leads to
adaptation and thus evolution over millions of years.
• Survival…… Can we draw a concept map???

Introduced species
IB

• Key words:
Niche
Reproductive rate
Population
Alien species
Extinction

• Introduced Species
• Watch the above video and write a definition for introduced species
in your notebook.
Artificial selection
IB

https://youtu.be/mQePz62zkqA
• Why artificial selection? https://youtu.be/EhkYc7fHcR0
• To improve quality and quantity.
• To get the desired characteristics.
• Students explore examples of
breeding and selection:
- Cows
- Broccoli
Genetic modification
IB

• How can farmers improve yield more than

cross breeding?
• Direct modification of genes(DNA)
• To improve quality and quantity : disease
resistance, drought resistant and others…..
• Students explore the need for Gene
modification?
• Students debate about GM food.
• Keywords: DNA, Genes, consequences of
modification, ethical implications

Plant adaptations to dry environments
IB

• Learning Objective:
• Students explore Photosynthesis,
chlorophyll and stomata
Parts of Plant and their functions-RECALL
Function of Leaf-RECALL
Read TB Pg 37 and answer the following
questions
• Name a few plants that grow in dry environments.
• What are xerophytic plants?
• Name a few adaptations for xerophytic plants.
IB

Observing stomata
Watch the below video and write an experiment. Your experiment
should include an Aim, Materials and procedure.
Write a definition for stomata and also draw the structure of a
stomata.
Submit your report

ATL Skills-COLLABORATION
Roles in groups. Help each other by discussing what you think .
Share ideas and collaborate.
Controlling water loss from leaves: Criteria B and C
IB

• Design you experiment.

• What are the variables. Critical
thinking
• What is the apparatus used?
Summative Assessment –criterion BC
Does the amount of water plants lose depend on its species?

•Directions:
•Take 2 plants of different species (types) A and Band keep them under similar conditions [light exposure,
temperature].
•Independent variable:
•Dependant variable:

• Control variable:
1. Weigh the initial mass of the plant before watering and record your data.
2. Over the next 5 days, weigh the plant every day before watering it. Record your data.
3. Your data table should include the weights of the plants before and after watering the plants and find the
average weight of the plants over the five days.

• Draw a graph with your results

Human Impacts on Natural communities-Summative Criterion D.
It is our responsibility to keep this amazing ecosystem happy and healthy. This is not only a
wonderful reflection topic; it also is a wonderful way for you to become involved in your
community!

Start by reading textbook pages 40-41, research and write a report.

read textbook
pages 40-41
• Paragraph-1 Research It
• How have humans caused species extinction? Mention a few reasons and fully
describe one of them.

• Paragraph-2 Personalize It
• Many people in our region do amazing things to help restore or protect native wildlife.
Some examples are looking after a local wood, protecting local woodland from non-
native wild animals and protecting endangered species. Identify one organization in
your local area (Qatar) that focuses on protecting native wildlife. Outline what this
organization does - find out about their history and their successes and difficulties.
Explain what role you could play in this organization.
Human Impacts on Natural communities-
Summative Criterion D
• Paragraph-3 Factor It
• Finally, look at our wildlife in our local community through a
lens. Comment on the question “Why aren’t we doing more
to protect our wildlife?” The lenses that you can look
through are: Economical, Environmental, Ethical, Cultural,
Political, Social, and Moral. These lenses are defined below
the grading rubric. Begin this paragraph with this sentence,
“I am looking at the topic of helping native wildlife around
me through a ______ lens.” This paragraph requires some
higher-level thinking. Don’t rush – give this some thought!
