• It is the ability to feel with the clients as opposed to feeling
for the clients

Emphatic
Understanding • It is the ability to communicate this understanding so that
the client perceives that she/he has been heard accurately

• It is the ability to understand, identify and communicate


feelings and meanings that are at the surface level of the
client’s disclosure
• These are defined as the belief in the innate worth and
potential of clients and the ability to communicate this
Respect and belief in the helping relationship.

Positive
Regard • When this is communicated, it provides clients with
positive reinforcement relative to their innate ability to
take responsibility for their own growth, change, and
determination towards eventual resolution.
• These describe the ability to be authentic in the
helping relationship.

Genuineness
• The ability to be real (as oppose to being
and artificial).
Congruence
• To be congruent (or consistent) in term of actions
and words.
• It is the ability not only to see the incomplete
picture that clients paint with their words, but
also to communicate to the clients the figure,
images, and structures that will complete the
picture.
Concreteness
• It will also enable the counselors or therapists help
the client identify distortions in the situation and
fit together to enable the clients view the situation
realistically.
• It is the ability to communicate and demonstrate
genuine caring and concern for clients.
Warmth
• It is conveying their acceptance of clients, and the
sincere interest in finding workable solutions.
• It is the ability to deal with the here-
Immediacy and-now factors.
• This addresses the counselors’ and therapists’
Cultural receptiveness, openness, and the motivation to
learn about their own culture diversity as well as
Awareness the cultural diversity that clients bring to the
helping relationship.
