GASES? GASES
WATER VAPOR
●is the gaseous phase of water.
●it is one state of water within
the hydrosphere.
●water vapor can be produced from
the evaporation or boiling of liquid
water or from the sublimation of ice.
●water vapor is transparent
WATER VAPOR
Water vapor does not control the Earth’s
temperature, but is instead controlled by the
temperature.
CARBON DIOXIDE
● is considered as the major
contributor to the greenhouse effect.
● It occurs naturally and as a result of
human activities.
● it is an inevitable byproduct of the
combustion of fossil fuels, such as
coal, gasoline, and natural gas.
CARBON DIOXIDE
Critical to plant growth and food production
METHANE
● a hydrocarbon gas resulting from
both natural causes and as a result of
human activities such as agriculture
and farming.

● Methane is far less abundant than

CO2 in the atmosphere.
METHANE
Odorless and colorless
NITROUS OXIDE
● occurs naturally in Earth’s
atmosphere as part of the
nitrogen cycle.
● agriculture, transportation and
industry activities are major
sources of nitrous oxide
emissions.
FLOURINATED GASES
● are emitted in smaller quantities
than the other greenhouse gases.

● Aluminum and semiconductor

manufacturing processes are
among the principal emitters of
the fluorinated gases
FLOURINATED GASES
High global warming potential gases.
AEROSOLS
WHAT ARE
AEROSOLS
?
AEROSOLS

An aerosol is a suspension of
fine solid particles or liquid droplets
in air or another gas.
Aerosols can be natural or anthropogenic.
AEROSOLS

NATURAL AEROSOLS

Examples of natural aerosols

are fog or mist, dust, forest exudates,
and geyser steam.
AEROSOLS
ANTHROPOGENIC
AEROSOLS

Examples of anthropogenic aerosols

are particulate air pollutants and smoke.
DIRECT AND INDIRECT EFFECT
OF AEROSOLS
DIRECT EFFECT

Affect climate because they intercept and scatter a

small portion of incoming radiation from the sun.
INDIRECT EFFECT

Aerosols are the key elements of cloud formation.

Human activities that increase atmospheric
aerosol loadings.

• Biomass burning
• Industrial emission of smoke and dust particles.
• Dust pall caused by intensive agricultural exploitation.
• Human-induced desertification
VEGETATION AND
ALBEDO CHANGE
WHAT IS VEGETATION?
Vegetation is a general term for the plant life of a
region. It refers to the ground cover provided by
plants, and is, by far, the most abundant biotic
element of the biosphere.
WHAT IS ALBEDO?
Albedo means the whiteness or the proportion
of light reflected from a surface. The higher
the albedo, the more the surface reflects light.
ALBEDO

snow and ice have a dark rock would

high albedos have a lower albedo.
ALBEDO CHANGE
ALBEDO CHANGE

• As the world warms the Earth’s albedo shifts.

• The amount of ice covering the planet is
dropping as a result of increased temperatures
from global warming.
ALBEDO CHANGE

• The conditions caused as a result of

the greenhouse effect can also change the
albedo of the Earth.
