INTRODUCTION
• The word Cobalt is derived from the German term Kobald,
meaning goblin or evil spirit. Cobalt is a chemical element with
the symbol Co and atomic number 27. In pure form, cobalt is
silvery-blue and brittle. It is similar to iron and nickel. Cobalt is
found in plants, animals, air, water, soil, and rocks.
BRIEF HISTORY
• Cobalt salts were used to decorate ancient Chinese pottery with brilliant blue
designs. Other ancient civilizations discovered the artistic potential of cobalt
without knowing what metal they were using. Cobalt itself was not discovered
until the 1730s. Until the 1700s, the pigments made from cobalt were called
smalt or safflor. Later, it was discovered by a Swedish chemist called Georg
Brandt in 1739 while studying minerals from cobalt containing mine in
Germany.

USES OF CO
• Cobalt has numerous industrial, commercial, and medical applications due to
its unique properties. Cobalt is a crucial component for producing lithium-ion
batteries, which we use in electronic devices such as smartphones, laptops,
and electric vehicles. It is used in various alloys and these alloys are used in
aerospace components, gas turbines, and jet engines. It is important to know
that it is also needed by humans and animals in small amounts because it is a
part of vitamin B12.
