THE NUMBER OF

SUBATOMIC PARTICLES IN
ATOMS, IONS AND ISOTOPES
GROUP 3
You have learned about the three subatomic particles;protons, electrons and
neutrons;and how these are arranged in the currently accepted model of the atom.

All atoms of an element contain the same number of protons in their nuclei.

The number of protons in an atom of a given element is referred as atomic

number,designated as Z.
The number of protons However, when the
must be equal to the number of protons and
number of electrons in an electrons is not equal, ions
electrically neutral atom. are formed.
Atoms are the building block of
matter,which are the solids,the liquids
and the gases.
ATOMS -Basically,this means that atoms made
up everything in our universe, even
including ourselves.
 Atoms are the smallest distinguishable
particle according to its properties
and characteristics.
 Its name came from the Greek word
ATOMS ''atomos'' which means ''indivisibled''.
 This is because atoms are the smallest
stable unit of matter and we
cannot futher divide it into smaller
parts.
 WILLIAM CROOKES
 1869
WHO
INVENTED THE  He was a British Physicist who was
CROOKES able to discover that an atom or each
TUBE?
of the atoms is made up of the same 3
subatomic particles.
WHAT IS ATOMIC NUMBER??
-Atomic number is the number of protons
CALCULATION present in the nucleus of an atom Z.
OF SUBATOMIC WHAT IS ATOMIC MASS NUMBER??
PARTICLES IN AN
ATOM & ION -Atomic mass number is the total number of
protons and neutrons present in the nucleus
of an atom A.
 Isotopes can be defined as the variants
of chemical elements that prossess the
same number of protons and
electrons,but a different number of
neutrons.
WHAT IS  In other words, Isotopes are variants of
ISOTOPES? elements that differ in their nucleon (The
total number of protons and
neutrons) numbers due to difference in
the total number of neutrons in their
respective nuclei.
