How do genetic
disorders occur?
Genetic abnormalities occur when
there is an abnormality in one or
more genes. Some genetic disorders
are passed down from parents to
children through their genes.
Sometimes there are sporadic
changes in the DNA of a gene that
cause the developing baby to be
affected without a prior family
history.
Down
Syndrome
Down syndrome is a
condition in which a person
has an extra chromosome
Tay-Sachs
Tay-Sachs disease is a rare genetic
disorder passed from parents to
child. It's caused by the absence of
an enzyme that helps break down
fatty substances.
Cystic Fibrosis
Cystic fibrosis is a genetic condition. It's
caused by a faulty gene that affects the
movement of salt and water in and out of cells.
This, along with recurrent infections, can result
in a build-up of thick, sticky mucus in the
body's tubes and passageways – particularly the
lungs and digestive system.
