TMJ Disorders
The temporomandibular joint
(TMJ) acts like a sliding hinge that
connects your jawbone to your
skull.
We don’t know for certain how many people
have TMJ disorders, but some estimates suggest
that over 10 million Americans are affected.

There Are Three Main Classes Of TMDs:

 Disorders of the joints, including disc


disorders.

 Disorders of the muscles used for chewing


(masticatory muscles).

 Headaches associated with a TMD.


Signs and Symptoms of TMJ Disorders

 Pain or soreness of your jaw

 Constant pain in one or both of the


temporomandibular joints

 Difficulty chewing or pain while chewing

 Aching facial pain


Factors That May Increase The Risk Of
Developing TMJ Disorders

 Various types of arthritis, such as rheumatoid arthritis


and osteoarthritis

 Long-term (chronic) grinding or clenching of teeth

 Particular connective tissue diseases

 Patients with other chronic inflammatory arthritis

 People with badly positioned teeth or jaw trauma


Treatment for TMJ Disorders

 Eat soft foods.

 Reduce habits such as jaw clenching, gum chewing, or


nail biting.

 Apply heat or cold to the face in combination with


exercises to gently stretch and strengthen the jaw
muscles.
