 Isa form of visual communication that became


popular with the invation of the modern newspaper
and motion pictures in 20th century.
 Modern cartoons were first used to attract people to
read newspaper and watch movies.
 Cartoon is as old man. Just take a look at the walls of
prehistoric cave dwellers.
DIFFERENT TYPES OF
CARTOONS
1. Editorial cartoon
- a cartoon found in the editor’s page of newspapers. It is a one-panel or stand-alone
comic strip in which the main intent is to present an opinion about current event.
2. Comic strip
- a series of little drawings arranged box-by-box, some or all of which may contain
dialogue. It is a type of cartoon that has become familiar and popular to many people.
3. Caricature
- Some cartoons often model their characters from famous people, such as politicians
or movie stars. They are often drawn in a distorted manner which exaggerates certain
things about them.
WHAT ARE CARTOON CHARACTERS?

 CARTOONIST give a lot of attention to their characters. For them,


cartoons give a peek into the lives of the characters that they
represent.
 Animation and character design as art form is now big business.
 Cartoonist like the famous Charles Schulz and Bill Waterson have
been creating amusing characters and fantasy creatures for a long
time.

 PHYSICAL FEATURES – some general points about human figure would be


useful but not necessary. In the world of cartoon-making, traditional practices or
rules on proportion are not followed or ignored.
 FACIAL CHARACTER – like the human face, the cartoonist face provides
clues about the identity, personality and mood of the cartoonist. It tells us a
great deal about its owner-whether they are male or female. The face alone says
it all.

 HANDS – hands are very expressive of character. Hands


can convey feelings of enjoyment, anger, or fright.
Presenting hands in cartoons can vary a lot.
 FEET – feet, including footwear, are an important feature
of cartoon characterization.
Recent Developments in Cartoon Character
Making

 Cartoonist today have also started developing different


characters digitally.
 They crop, edit, enhance, lighten, darken, shade, add
color, or do anything possible with the computer.
 They also use scanners, tablets, digital pens, printers, and
whatever new gadgets are available.
