Persuasive Essay

Writing to convince others of your opinion


• A writer persuades the reader to accept a particular point of view, or
take an action by using logic and reason.
(Think or Act in a certain way)

• The writer presents a situation, and takes a stand – either in it’s favor
or against it.

• Persuasive essays require: good research – solid understanding of


both sides.

• Demonstrates why the writer’s opinion is correct, and also why the
opposing view is incorrect.
Steps of Writing a Persuasive Essay:
1. Prewriting the essay

2. Drafting the essay

3. Revising/Editing the essay

Persuasive writings are found in advertising, blogs, or political


speeches.
1- Prewriting the Persuasive Essay:
( Planning Phase)
• Choose a position: think about the issue & choose side

• Understand the audience: undecided or bias

• Do the research: solid evidence – several sources – multiple reference


material – enough knowledge about both sides of the issue

• Identify the most convincing evidence: both sides


2. Drafting the Persuasive Essay:
Introductory Paragraph
• Grab the reader’s attention by using a “hook.”
• Give an overview of the argument.
• Close with a thesis statement that reveals the position to be argued.
Body Paragraphs
• Each body paragraph should focus on a separate point.
• Within each paragraph, provide sufficient supporting details.
• State your facts, prove your thesis, and disapprove the opponent’s
facts and arguments.
Concluding Paragraph
Restate the thesis and supporting evidence. Encourage the reader to adapt your position or take action.
3-Revising and Editing the Persuasive Essay:
• Check the rubric
• Proofread and correct grammar errors
• Capitalization and punctuation
• Reference (APA citation)
