CONSTRUCTION OF STAIRCASE
• Building Staircase requires technical of structural carpentry and craftsmanship of cabinet
making.
• It is like constructing an inclined bridge between two points on different floors with
uniform, well proportional treads and risers that are safe and comfortable to climb and
descend.
DEFINITIONS
Carriage – that the portion which supports the steps of a wooden stairs.
Closed String – a staircase without open well in a dog stairs.
Flight of stairs – is the series of steps leading from one landing to another.
Front String – the strig on the side of stairs where the handrail is placed.
Flyers – steps in a flight that are parallel with each other.
Handrail – a rail running parallel with the inclination of the stairs that holds the balusters.
Landing – is the horizontal floor as resting place in a flight.
Newel – the central column where the steps of a circular staircase wind.
DEFINITIONS
Nosing – the front edge of the steps that project beyond the riser.
Rise – the height of a flight of stairs from landing to landing or the height between successive
treads or stairs.
Riser – The vertical face of a stair step.
Run – the horizontal distance from the first to the last riser of a stair flight.
Staircase – is the whole set of stairs; the structural containing flight of a stairs.
Stairwell – the vertical shaft which contains a staircase
Pitch – the angle of inclination of the horizontal of the stairs.
