Aims and Purpose of Evidence-Based Practice

The document discusses the aims, objectives, and principles of evidence-based practice in nursing. It aims to 1) provide high-quality and cost-effective care, 2) advance the quality of nursing practice, and 3) increase patient satisfaction by focusing on evidence and research rather than habits and tradition. Evidence-based practice seeks to make nursing a less subjective enterprise and raise it to a higher level of accountability by being guided by rigorous research like randomized controlled trials. The ultimate goal is to provide the highest quality and most cost-efficient nursing care.

Aims of Evidence based Practice (EBP)

1. To provide high quality and cost effective nursing care possible.

2. To advance quality of care provided by nurses.
3. To increase satisfaction among patient.
4. To focus on nursing practice away from habits and tradition to evidence
and research.
5. It result in better patient outcomes.
6. It contributes to the science of nursing.
7. It keeps practice current and relevant.
8. It increases confidence in decision-making.

1
Objectives of Evidence Based Practice

1. Evidence based practice seeks to replace practice as usual with guided by rigorous
outcome oriented research, ideally randomized controlled trials.
2. It also seeks to make practice a less subjective enterprise and to raise it to a higher
level of accountability.
3. It is associated with efforts to identify based practices in nursing and other
disciplines.

2
Purpose of Evidence based Practice

EBP allows nurses to enrich their clinical training and experience with up-to-date research. Following are
some of the essential purpose of EBPs in nursing-
1. The goal is to quickly incorporate the best available research along with clinical experience and patient
preference into clinical practice, so nurses can make informed patient care decision.
2. The goal of evidence based practice is to improve health and safety of patients while also providing
care in a cost effective manner to improve the outcomes for both the patient and the healthcare system.
3. In nursing evidence based practice is important because it aims to provide the most effective care that is
available with the aim of improving outcomes.
4. EBP is an approach that tries to specify the way in which professionals or other decision makes should
make decision by identifying such evidence that there may be for a practice and rating it according to
low scientifically sound it may be.

5. Its goal is to eliminate unsound or excessively risky practices in favour of those that have better
outcomes.
6. EBPs has contributed a lot towards better patient outcome.
7. The ultimate goal of EBP is to provide the highest quality and most cost efficient nursing care.
8. The purpose or utility of EBP in nursing is mainly to improve the quality of nursing care.

Example of Evidence Based Practice

1. Through evidence-based practice, nurses have improved the care they deliver to patients. Key examples of
evidence-based practice in nursing include: Giving oxygen to patients with COPD: Drawing on evidence to
understand how to properly give oxygen to patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
2. Generally, a nurse will make a care call 48 to 72 hours after a patient is discharged. Care calls build
relationships between nurses and patients and improve patient’s satisfaction regarding their healthcare
experience. Some hospitals are including both care rounding and care calls as part of their best practices.
3. Providers must deliver quality care compassion and convenient care access to ensure a positive patient
experience.
• Frame patient safety as key to positive patient experiences.
• Treat patient consumerism like a retail experience.
• Make healthcare access convenient.

6
Principles of Evidence based Practice

1. EBP included the integration of best available evidence, clinical expertise and patient values and
circumstances related to patient and client management practice management and health policy decision
making.
2. Eight EBP principles for effective interventions-
I. Assess actuarial risk/need.
II. Enhance intrinsic motivation.
III. Target interventions.
a) Risk principle.
b) Need principle
c) Responsivity principle.
d) Treatment principle.

e) Doses
IV. Skill train with directed practice.
V. Increase positive renforcement.
VI. Engage ongoing support in natural communities.
VII. Measure relevent processes/practices.
VIII. Provide measurement feedback.

I. Assess actuarial risk/need-Develop and maintain a complete system of ongoing offender risk screening /
triage and need assessment.
II. Enhance intrinsic motivation- Staff should related to offenders in interpersonally sensitive and constrictive
way to enhance intrinsic motivation in offenders.
III.Target intervention-
a) Risk principle- Prioritize supervision and treatment resources for higher risk offenders.
b) Need principle- Target intervention to crimogenic need.

8
c) Responsivity principle- Be responsive to temperament learning style motivation gender and culture when assigning to
programmes.
d) Dosage- Structure 40-70% of high-risk offenders time for 3-9 months.
e) Treatment principle- Integrate treatment into the full sentence/sanction requirement.
IV. Skill train with directed practice- Provide evidence-based programing that emphasizes cognitive behavioral startgies
and is delivered by well trained staff.
V. Increase Positive Reinforcement - When learning new skills and making behavioral changes, human beings appear to
respond better and maintain learned behaviors for longer period of time, when approached with carrots rather
than sticks.
VI. Engage on-going support in natural communities- Religion and activiely engage pro-social supports for offenders in
their communities.
VII. Measure relevant processes/practices- Accurate and detailed documentation of case information, along with a formal
and valid mechanism for measuring outcomes, it the foundation of evidence-based practice.
VIII. Provide measurement feedback- Once a method for measuring relevant processes/practices is in place the
9
information must be used to monitor process and change.
