Paperless
society
- Paper production is one of the most resource-
intensive and polluting industries in the world
- According to the World Wildlife Fund, the
global paper industry is responsible for:
- 10% of total deforestation
- 4% of global energy use
- 40% of industrial water pollution
- 25% of landfill waste
- Going paperless can help reduce these impacts
and conserve natural resources for future
generations
The Ecology Global Research Network
Globally, approximately 3-4 billion trees
are cut down each year to make paper. In
North America, approximately 1 billion
trees are cut down to manufacture paper
and packaging

According to a report by Statista

Global production of paper and
cardboard totals more than 400 million
metric tons each year

The challenges that come with going paperless
1.Data breaches:
One of the biggest risks associated with
going paperless is the risk of a data breach.
If sensitive information is stored online or on
digital devices, it can be vulnerable to
hacking, malware, and other types of
cyberattacks.
The challenges that come with going paperless
2. Data loss:
Another risk associated with going paperless
is the risk of data loss. If digital documents
are not backed up regularly, they can be lost
if a device fails or if there is a natural
disaster, such as a fire or flood.
The challenges that come with going paperless
3. Compliance issues:
Many industries are subject to regulations and
laws that govern how they handle sensitive
data. Going paperless can make it more
difficult to comply with these regulations and
can put businesses and organizations at risk of
fines and legal action.
The challenges that come with going paperless
4. Employee training:
Going paperless requires a significant shift in
the way that employees work and
communicate. This can be challenging, and it
may take time and resources to train employees
on how to use new systems and processes.
The challenges that come with going paperless
5. Resistance to change:
Finally, one of the biggest challenges
associated with going paperless is resistance
to change. Some employees may be resistant
to the idea of using new technology or may be
hesitant to give up paper-based processes that
they are familiar with.
To address these challenges, businesses and
organizations
 Need to develop comprehensive data privacy
and security policies
 Invest in secure digital storage solutions
 Provide ongoing training and support to
employees to ensure that they are using digital
systems and processes correctly.
 It is important to involve employees in the
transition process and to address any concerns
or resistance to change proactively.
Who has done it?
Dubai was working to achieve its "Dubai Paperless Strategy" since 2018.

On December 11, 2021, the country announced that it had achieved its goal:
"The use of paper has been completely eliminated in Dubai government institutions."
