Cutting Operation

Plant PROPAGATION BY CUTTING

 This is a method of propagation in which the stem

or the stalk of the plant to be propagated is cut into
desired lengths and allowed to root into the soil
with the proper moisture and warmth. This is best
done in the nursery where the direct sunlight can
be regulated. Not all plants can be propagated by
cutting.
Plant Propagation by CUTTING
Procedure
1. Prepare the appropriate tool for cutting.

- tools to be prepared must be sharp, clean, and appropriate

to the type of plant to be cut. Tools such as bolo, knife,
scissors, pruning shear.
- Dull tools will produce dull cuts which do not heal easily
that could lead to slow root formation and predispose
cutting to infections.
Plant Propagation by CUTTING
Procedure
2. Prepare planting media. Put planting media on a
seedling bag or in a seed box.

- The planting media should be composed of garden

soil, organic matter and either saw dust/ rice hull.
The mixture should be in a 1:1 ratio.
Plant Propagation by CUTTING
Procedure
3. Go to the field and select a healthy mother plant whose
branch or twig will be used as cutting. Determine the
characteristic of a healthy branch.

- The mother plant to be selected must be of good

condition, noted for its productivity and quality of
produce, or it must be noted for its easthetic and economic
value.
Plant Propagation by CUTTING
Procedure
4. Detach the selected branch or branches from the mother
plant. Make sure to cut it clean and apply paint on the area
of the cut to avoid entry of disease causing organisms.

- The branch to be used should not have any damage, the

leaves should not have any damage caused by insects or
by diseases.
Plant Propagation by CUTTING
Procedure
5. Using the prepared tools, cut the selected twig
using a sharp and clean cutting tool to produce a
clean cut. Make sure that the cutting bear enough
nodes and buds.
- Cuttings from plants with nodes and internodes
like sugarcane, there must be 3 eyes to a cutting
and for trees it must have at least 3 active buds.
Plant Propagation by CUTTING
Procedure
6. After cutting, dip the lower tip of the cutting to a
root growing solution to induce fast root growth.
- Using of root growth solution will insure fast
recovery of the cuttings.
Plant Propagation by CUTTING
Procedure
7. Put the cuttings to the prepared growing media
and make sure that the lower end is in the contact to
the soil.
- Keep the planting media moist, water the cutting
regularly to avoid dehydration and to ensure
survival.
Plant Propagation by CUTTING
Procedure
8. When the cuttings are about 6 months old and
have enough leaves, cuttings on seedling bags can be
transferred to the field where it can grow into a
normal plant.
- Prepare the field before transplanting.
