COOPERATION AND COLLABORATION AS
KEYS TO BETTER INTERRELATIONS
The interrelations and exchange among peoples,
nations, industries, and institutions have been
carried out more effectively and fruitfully by
means of collaboration and cooperation. These
concepts are interchangeably used, although
there are, in a stricter sense, some differences .
Collaboration is working together toward a common end goal by
actors (people, nations, industries, and institutions) who are not
necessarily allies.

In collaboration, the actors set aside their differences and focus on

their mutual interest which is the attainment of common goals.

Cooperation in jointly working in pursuit of a common end or goal

by actors who consider themselves as friends.

Collaboration and cooperation are undertaken along such areas as

economic, sociocultural, military, and technological
Cooperation is better understood in the study of regionalism or the
interrelations among the actors in a particular geographic area.

In southeast asia, the longest existing vehicle for regional

cooperation is the association of southeast Asian nations (ASEAN).
Founded in 1967 by Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore,
and Thailand, ASEAN in now comprised of 10 member countries.it
pursues the holistic goal of the social, economic, political, and
environmental, development of the region.
THE THREE PILLARS, WHICH REPRESENT ASEAN’S
MAJOR AREAS OF COOPERATION.

*ASEAN political-security community(APSC)

*ASEAN Economic community(AEC)
*ASEAN socio-Cultural Community(ASCC)

IN 2015, The AEC was implemented. Central to this is the ASEAN

free trade agreement (AFTA),Allowing a free trade area in which
ASEAN members implement a common trade policy for internal
trade but also have their own individual policies for external trade.
The ASEAN’s worth can be drawn from the recognitions it received from
political scirntists, international leaders, and prestigious institutions.
Former UN secretary-General kofi annan praised the
ASEAN, saying it was a regional organization with the
power . This means the ASEAN can deliver what it has
promised to do. Due to the growing unpopularity of
U.S . For making unilateral decisions in the conduct of
international relations, American diplomat Richard Haas
(1999) sort of endorsed the ASEAN by proposing that U.S.
Should strive to build consensus, practice consultation, and
be involved in a kind of regionalism where consensus and
capacity building would be sought for consultation,
consensus, and capacity building are primary principles in
the ASEAN.
Another case of regionalism is the European Union(EU). Unlike the
ASEAN, the EU’s scope of concern is wholly economic, making it
an economic bloc. The EU traces its origins from the establishment
of the European coal and steel community (ECSC) in 1951 and the
European economic community (EEC) in 1957.

The EU, formally established in 1993, has developed into a customs

union having common trade policies for internal or external trade.it
has also evolved into a single market using a common or single
currency called euro.
It currently has 27 members as the united kingdom decided to leave
after a 2016 referendum (popularly termed as Brexit).
The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) was formed
by some western European and north American countries
for the primary purpose of protecting the freedom and
security of its members through political ang military means.
NATO was formally established in 1949.

NATO was actively involved in may world events regarding

security such as nuclear threats during the cold war;
response to terrorism; undertaking of peace missions in
Afghanistan. Libya, and Kosovo; and maintaining security
of its members countries.
