CHAPTER: 4 TO 6

• Juan Crisostomo Ibarra y Magsalin { Ibarra }


Wealthy young man of mixed Spanish and Filipino ancestry who has recently returned to the Philippines from
Europe after spending seven years studying abroad.

• Lieutenant Guevarra
An elderly lieutenant of the Guardia Civil and a close friend of Don Rafael Ibarra.

• Don Santiago de los Santos


Commonly known as Kapitan Tiago, he was an influencial businessman in San Diego.

Maria Clara de los Santos y Alba
A lover of Crisostomo, and she is the daughter of Captain Tiago and Doña Pia Alba.
• Damaso Verdolagas {Padre Damaso}
Commonly known as Padre Damaso, he is described to be a snobbish, ruthless and judgemental extrovert. He does not control his
words when speaking and he always berates or criticizes other people around him.
• Doña Pia Alba
She was the wife of Capitan Tiago and the mother of Maria Clara. Born into the wealthy Alba family in Sta. Cruz, Manila, she
expanded their business operations by having her husband buy land in San Diego.
• Don Rafael Ibarra
Is the father of Crisostomo Ibarra, he was passed away before the novel begins. Don Rafael is one of the most richest in San Diego.
Chapter: 4
“ Heritic And Subversive ”

• Ibarra is walking home at the night in Binondo when he is approached by lieutenant Guevara.

• Lieutenant Guevara reveals to Ibarra the circumstances surrounding the death of his father, Don
Rafael.

• Don Rafael was accused of heresy and subversion, leading to his arrest and subsequent death in
prison.

• Lieutenant Guevara explains that don Rafael had many enemies due to his wealth and social
status.
CHAPTER: 5
“ A STAR IN THE DARK NIGHT ”

• Crisostomo Ibarra settles in Fonda de Lala and appreciates from a distance the lively singing
and noise around Captain Tiago’s house, which could be seen from the hotel window.

• His ruminates about his poor father’s death, and how life must have been extremely excruciating
for him in prison.
Chapter: 6
“ Captain Tiago ”

• Captain Tiago is introduced as a man of Filipino descent who is considered one of the region’s wealthiest
property owners. He is the only child of a sugar businessman in the municipality of Malabon.

• Captain Tiago has received an education in logic with the help of a Dominican friend whom he served.

• He is depicted as a wealthy landlord in Binondo and a planter in San Diego.

• Captain Tiago is the highest-ranking Filipino official in the town of San Diego, he serves as the local leader
or mayor.
