FINAL YEAR TIPS

Soha Yawar
Khyber College of Dentistry
 Aoa everyone! I am Soha Yawar, former
student at Khyber College of Dentistry. I’ll
be sharing the final year course outline
and my method of study for final year. My
plan of study may not suit everyone but
this is just to give you an idea on how and
what to do. So here we go!
SEVERAL THINGS TO TAKE CARE
OF:
 Start studying earlier in the year. Take stages
seriously and you’ll be at a huge advantage.
 Final year’s course is too much to be covered
easily in preps. Even if you get it covered once,
revision is a tough job. Do little each day.
 MCQs and SEQs are partly scenarios as they were
in third year and partly straightforward.
 Not all the questions are going to be from past
papers as they were in third year so you’ll have
to clear your concepts very well.
 Learn in wards as much as you can. These things
help a lot with understanding the course.
CONTINUED…
 Past papers for final year are Kinza’s past
papers. Follow those for a guide to SEQ’s
answers.
 For MCQs, the past papers have got a lot of
mistakes so don’t blindly follow the key. Correct
them according to what you’ve studied.
 Diagrams in theory paper are, as always, going
to get you good marks.
 Get pictures/videos of all the stuff beforehand
for OSCEs. You might not get enough break
between theory exams and OSCEs to go to wards
and study all those things.
CONTINUED…
 Always read or add stuff from slides to your
book/notes. You’ll find important things in
there, specially for MCQs.
 Watch videos on YouTube, be it any channel.
(Dr. Teeth has got good videos too)
SUBJECTS TO BE DISCUSSED
 Orthodontics
 Prosthodontics
 Endodontics
 Operative Dentistry
 Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
 Paediatric Dentistry

*Exam in Endo and Operative is one.*

*Endo/Operative and Paeds are minor subjects.*
ORTHODONTICS
 I used a mix of 3 books for Ortho i.e
1. Bhalajhi (used this majorly though)
2. Laura Mitchells
3. Proffit (long book)
COURSE FROM BHALAJHI
 Included chapters:
1-4,6-9,11-12,14-
38,42.
 From chapter 5, I did
only the topic
‘Deglutition’.
 For better
understanding, I read
the chapter
‘Orthodontic
Diagnosis’ and
‘Biomechanics’ from
Proffit as well.
CONTINUED…
 I gave chapter 29-34 (of
Bhalajhi) a read from its
corresponding chapters
in Laura as well.
 Section of Treatment
Planning is very
important. Your long
case is majorly from
that.
 Chapter 12 –
Cephalometrics is better
understood from ward
notes. Cram all the
values very well for both
theory paper and long
COURSE FROM LAURA
 Chapters I did include:
1-2,7-14,16
 From ch#3, I did Table
3.1, the topic
‘Premature loss of
deciduous teeth’ and
‘first permanent
molars of poor long
term prognosis'.
 Topic ‘Growth
Rotation’ is important-
I did it from slides.
KMU ANNUAL ORTHO PAPER - 2023
 Always try to
attempt (for all
subjects) those
questions that have
got parts rather than
a whole question of
5 marks. It's easier
to score more in
questions with more
parts.
 Viva in ortho is only
from long case.
PROSTHODONTICS
 Books I studied for:
1. Complete Denture – Nallaswamy
2. Fixed Partial Denture – Nallaswamy
3. Removable Partial Denture – McCracken
 Miscellaneous topics – Dr. Shafi's slides

*Although I couldn’t,
but you can also
watch Ann Windchy's
videos for prostho.*
COMPLETE DENTURE
COMPLETE DENTURE
REMOVABLE PARTIAL DENTURE
 From McCracken, I did
only chapter 5-8.
 Rest, I followed Dr.
Akbar Khalil’s slides
(Teacher at KCD)

FIXED PARTIAL
DENTURE
 Skimmed through
all chapters in
Nallaswamy.
 Rest, I followed Dr.
Asif's slides (these
are very important)
MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS
 These include:
1. Gerodontology
2. Oral and maxillofacial prosthesis
3. Implant
4. TMPDs

I did all these topics from Dr. Shafi's slides.

KMU ANNUAL PROSTHO PAPER - 2023
 You'll have to do teeth
set up (40 marks) on
the day of OSCEs.
You'll have only 1 hour
so practice well in
wards.
 You'll also have to
take impressions of
either your fellow or
a model, in alginate
(20 marks). Follow
the whole protocol
properly.
ENDODONTICS
 Book that I used was Jayshree.
 You’ll need to revise this book
again and again or you’ll forget
things easily. It’s a tiny book
but very hard to remember.
 Long book for it is Pathways of
Pulp but I never really used it.
It's too long and not doable in
the end. However, great for
building concepts.
COURSE OUTLINE
 All the chapters are
included except
chapter 21 – Lasers.
 You can give chapter
1 a read from
Pathways of Pulp for
better understanding.
 Did chapter 5 and 12
from slides – not too
detailed.
OPERATIVE DENTISTRY
 The book I used was
the International Edition of
Art and Science.
 All chapters included
except:
15,23,24.
 However, don't skip these
chapters if taught in class.
 I did only Staining and
Bleaching topics from
chapter 17.
COURSE OUTLINE
OPERATIVE EXAM CASE
 Exam case is taken during ward days.
 You've to do a filling in about 1.5h.
 Follow this sheet for a guide to the proper
protocol.
SURGERY
 Used the book Contemporary.
 The book is pretty long but
very easy.
 Prepare diagrams well.
 Follow all teacher’s slides as
well. Slides in surgery are
very important.
 Only give a read to chapter
27.
COURSE OUTLINE
 All chapters are included except: 4,12,18,24,26-29.
SURGERY EXAM CASE
 There's a ward test (in
ward days) as well as
exam case (os OSCE
day) on extraction.
 The whole protocol
needs to be followed.
 Each step has its own
marks as shown in the
picture.
PAEDIATRIC DENTISTRY
 I studied from Dr. Hashim’s slides.
 Did a few chapters from the handbook as well
i.e chapter 11, 22, 25.
COURSE OUTLINE
 Dr. Hashim’s slides are
very extensive and cover
the course well.
 Chapters covered in
slides are written in the
image.
 Exam case in peads
is taken during ward
days.
 That’s all from my end for now. If you've got
any questions, you can email me at:
