When death strikes!!!

Present scenario in india
What does heart do?

• HEART FUNCTIONS
• A mechanical pump to deliver oxygen blood
from lungs to all body
• Deliver de-oxygenated blood from body to
lungs
Heart functions...
What happens when heart stops

15 sec: Unconsciousness

30 sec: Flat ECG

60 sec: Pupils dilate fully

90-300 sec: Cerebral damage

Why CPR is important and where are we
Importance of CPR
History- Basic life support
• BLS is a temporary measure to maintain ventilation
and circulation
• 1958: Peter Safar & James Elam Mouth to mouth
ventilation
• Nominated three times for the Nobel Prize in
medicine
• Birth of Modern CPR:
• 1960 modern CPR came into existence by
• Jude
• Kouwenhoven
• Knickerbocker
Updates from various organizations

• American Heart Association (AHA)

• European Resuscitation Council (ERC)

• The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada

(HSFC)
What is CPR

CPR is the process of taking over Heart and Lungs in the event of halt in function of either

Cardiac i.e., Heart Pulmonary i.e., Lung

Resuscitation Resuscitation

CPR is simultaneous resuscitation i.e. restart of both heart and lungs

Basic life support who ? when? where?

• Sequences : to restore the circulation of oxygenated blood

• Chest compressions and pulmonary ventilation performed by
• Anyone
• Immediately
• without any other equipment
CPR Guidelines
Response

• ‘Unconsciousness is a state of unarousable

unresponsiveness’

• Person unaware of surroundings

• Groaning without eye opening, failure to

respond – manage as unconscious

• Call for ”HELP”

Position
• Place on hard surface
• Place victim level
• All body parts rolled over at the
same time
• Always be aware of head and
spinal cord injuries
Early recognition

• Key step in the early treatment of cardiac

arrest.
• Checking the carotid pulse by lay persons
is an inaccurate method of confirming the
presence or absence of circulation (Pulse
detected in only 40% of victims)
Circulation ...position

• Firm surface
• Rescuer on the side of the patient with hips
at the same level as patient’s chest.
• The elbows should be locked in position with
arms straight.
Circulation where to push

Xiphoid should not be pressed as it can lacerate the liver

Pressure should be on the sternum and not on the ribs
Circulation.. chest compressions

• Place heel of one hand on lower part of victim's

sternum

• With your other hand directly on top of firsthand,

depress sternum at least 2 inches.
Physiology of correct CPR
Physiology of CPR if too fast/slow

TOO SLOW TOO FAST

Physiology of CPR if too shallow
