The Plains
Geographical Description.

The cultural plains– different from the interior


plains of North America –describes the vast
grassland between the Mississippi river, Rocky
Mountains or from present day Saskatchewan and
Alberta to Southern Texas. It has a continental
climate with hot summers and cold winters, with
rivers providing most of the scarce water found
there. The ecosystems hosts a variety of flora and
fauna most notably grasses, deer, and bison.

Demography and Peoples

The cultural plains instead of the interior plains


refers to the cultural area in which the Plains
Indigenous peoples lived. It has no strict border
but describes a general area.
The groups living there are the Siksika, Piikani,
Kainai, Dakota, Stoney (Nakota), Cree, Ojibwe,
Assiniboine and Tsuut’ina. Metis people also
lived on the plains, however there were other large
and significant populations elsewhere.

There are three large language families to which


most plains Indigenous languages belong to.
Algonquin languages, Siouan languages and
Athapaskan (or Dene) language family.
Languages from different languages families are
completely different, and ones from the same
family will share limited similarities. This, along
with the nomadic lifestyle of many plains
Indigenous peoples caused them to develop hand
