INTRODUCTON TO PRACTICUM

MCP 697X
 TOTAL a) MCP 697: 300 HOURS – 3 MONTHS
 A clinical setting-hospital which has an established
NUMBER OF counselling department and a site supervisor of not less
than a masters degree.
HOURS TO BE  60 hours in class is spent on: seminars, sharing
experiences from the sites, debriefing, presenting cases
(each will present two cases twice in a formal format
COVERED : a case you have handled)
 i) Clinical sites include; hospitals either public or private a
setting which has an established counselling department
and manned by a qualified psychologist.
ii) Social sites include institutions of learning, private
counselling centres, rehabilitation centres and clinics
churches, homes, appropriate NGOs etc.

FURTHER INSTRUCTIONS

INSTRUCTIONS  Must register for the course

 You must have started your personal therapy in a
recommended clinic/centre for at least 15 sessions
(Must complete a total of 25 sessions by the end of
your practicum). You will be required to submit an
official letter from your therapist together with your
other dossiers at the end of the semester
 •You will be expected to hand in for marking
a. Comprehensive site(s) report. This
constitutes;-
I) Introduction and background
ASSESSMENT II) Description of the sites
III) Objectives and expectations
CRITERIA IV) Your involvements in the site
V) Challenges and resolutions of the challenges
VI) Your recommendations
VII)Conclusion
 I) A comprehensive write up of two cases you
have managed for not less than 4 sessions
which should include;-Detailed clinical
interview, assessments (with copies of
assessment instruments), progression and
termination where applicable.
ASSESSMENT II) Log/Diary stipulating your daily activities,
challenges, meetings etc.
CRITERIA III) JOURNAL (does not have to be typed)
A write up of your daily events in your

Cont’d practicum areas which will include;-

Clients seen, other activities involved relevant

to the practicum NB, this will be the source of

your final report as a reference point

IV) Site supervisors report. This must be
submitted confidentially to the unit lecturer
  You must be humble and willing to interact and
relate ethically and professionally with all
workers and other students:

 Practicum is a must for all counsellors where

you put your theory into practice and see it work
or not, where you learn as you consult with
others
EXPECTATIONS
 Practicum is a necessity for you to be accredited
as a counsellor by the professional association

 Be willing to be positively and professionally

mentored and taught by the professionals and
others in the site
 SITE SUPERVISOR

a) A qualified psychologist- MA holder its equivalent and above

b) Psychiatrist
c) Others- to be discussed
• NB; All your site supervisors will have to complete your assessment
form, seal it to maintain confidentiality and give it to you to hand it
in to the lecturer with the other documents
