Introduction

• xMax is an end-to-end Internet Protocol (IP) network

solution developed by xG that overcome most of the
problems in our current generation networks.

• It is a mobile wireless broadband network that includes a

variety of different products like high-performance APs
(access points), personal and mobile Wi-Fi hotspots, mobile
switching centers, and deployment tools.

Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, MIT, Manipal

• XMax delivers mobile VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol)
and broadband network that supports COTS (Commercial-
off-the-shelf ) devices

• It addresses numerous technical difficulties that come with

mobile VoIP and data.

Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, MIT, Manipal

Why xMax?

• Customers today demand more data applications to be

delivered on the go than they did a few years ago.

• Customers also need voice, data, location awareness,

chat and other applications’ support from the operators.

• xMax embraces COTS devices with an all-IP approach

that increases affordability and accessibility.

Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, MIT, Manipal

• Xmax with over the air (OTA) waveform when combined with
Media Access Control (MAC) offers an even better solution
that proves to be the best in the current generation of networks

• It solves spectrum challenges faced by other networks.

• It is highly secure. It is extremely difficult to hack into or jam

the network
xMax Architecture

Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, MIT, Manipal

The architecture of an xMax network contains 4 major parts:

i) xMod: xMod are the hotspots that act as a bridge between WiFi-
enabled commercial devices like smartphones, tablets and other
internet devices to the xMax cognitive network

ii) xAP : xAP radiates wide area of internet connectivity to end users
devices in the network via multiple xMods. The xAP is an access
point in a single channel that is optimised for xMods’ cognitive
radio operation

iii) xMSC: xMSC is an Access Network Gateway (ANG) in
the network that provides nearly all the connectivity in the
backend.

iv) xMonitor: It is a software that monitors the network. These

software tools provide integrated and comprehensive network
and element management for the xMax network, as well as
mobile network throughput and coverage optimization.

Working

• xMax uses cognitive radio and networking techniques,

including Dynamic Spectrum Access to provide reliable
operation in unlicensed but interference prone spectrum

• xMax cognitive radios can identify potential impairments to

communications quality, like interference, path loss,
shadowing and multipath fading.

• xMax can operate effectively under higher interference and

jamming levels than competing solutions using DSA and the
2x4 MIMO antenna configuration

Dynamic Spectrum Access (DSA)

• DSA is real time sensing of interference on a channel to

instantly change channels when better frequencies are
detected.

• xMAx goes beyond simply implementing DSA by using

IM techniques.

Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, MIT, Manipal

2x4 MIMO antenna configurations.

• This 2x4 MIMO antenna configurations, enables the xMax

system to use processing software to remove unwanted
interference from the desired xMax signals.

• The xMax radios employ this antenna configuration supports

speeds up to 50 Giga OPS (operations per second) for signal
processing.

Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, MIT, Manipal

Applications

• VoIP applications

• A viable solution for disaster response, emergency

communications, and defense applications

• xMax network architecture supports real time video, chat,

mobile voice, wideband and other applications over a single
integrated network

Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, MIT, Manipal

Future Scope

• The technology will have a huge impact rural ISPs

• It can be used to provide a mobile wireless broadband for a

large area over many kilometers.

• It can also be used in enterprise WLANs and metropolitan

networks

Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, MIT, Manipal

Conclusion

The xMax cognitive radio cellular system is a scalable, reliable

and secure mobile broadband and wideband solution that is
capable of delivering seamless communications in an efficient
manner.
