Introduction
The pre-colonial period in the Philippines
refers to the time before the arrival of
European colonizers, primarily the Spanish
in the 16th century. It was characterized
by a diverse array of indigenous cultures
and societies, including the kingdoms of
Tondo, Maynila, and the Sultanate of Sulu.
These societies had their own systems of
governance, trade networks, and cultural
practices. During the Pre-colonial Period in
the Philippines, various forms of folk
literature, including riddles, proverbs,
myths, and legends, played a significant
role in the cultural expression of the
indigenous people.

statements that challenge the listener to guess
the answer. They were a popular form of
entertainment and intellectual exercise during
the Pre-colonial Period. Riddles were used to
convey wisdom, cultural values, and moral
lessons. Examples of riddles from different
provinces in the Philippines can be found in the
oral traditions of the indigenous communities.
