WHO IS A WARRIOR?
The warrior is someone who has a steadfast mission and who knows what they want
to achieve. They have a purpose and a reason for being and as such, they are driven
like few others. Thus, the warrior doesn't give in and take the easy route.
They are specialized in fighting, either to defend their community or to lead attacks
against enemies.
Warriors are often found at the battleield or warfront. However, for some people, their
battle field is in their tent. Jael is one of them
WHO IS JAEL?
The Israelites were under oppression by King Jabin of Canaan and his military
commander, Sisera. Deborah, a prophetess and judge of Israel, and Barak, an
Israelite military leader, led a campaign against Sisera's army. Under their
leadership, the Israelites engaged Sisera's forces in battle and emerged
victorious. Sisera, however, managed to escape from the battlefield on foot.
He however sought refuge in the tent of Jael, who was the wife of Heber the
Kenite. While the Kenites were generally neutral or even had friendly ties with
King Jabin, Jael took matters into her own hands. She welcomed Sisera into
her tent, providing him with shelter and a drink of milk. As he rested, Jael took
a tent peg and a hammer, and while he was asleep, she drove the peg through
his temple, killing him.
The account can be found in Judges 4 and 5, with the actual event of Jael
killing Sisera mentioned in Judges 4:17-22.
“ BATTLE IS THE MOST MAGNIFICENT
COMPETITION IN WHICH A HUMAN BEING CAN
INDULGE. IT BRINGS OUT ALL THAT IS BEST;

IT REMOVES ALL THAT IS BASE.
George S. Patton Jr.
THE FEMALE WARRIOR AND WHAT WE CAN LEARN FROM HER

BECAUSE SHE WAS PRESENTED IN A LIMITED CONTEXT IN THE SCRIPTURE, WE CAN ONLY GET A SNAPSHOT
OF HER CHARACTER. HOWEVER, WE CAN INFER SEVERAL CHARACTERISTICS THAT JAEL POSSESSES:
• BRAVERY/COURAGE: JAEL TOOK SIGNIFICANT PERSONAL RISKS IN KILLING SISERA, THE COMMANDER OF
THE CANAANITE ARMY. GIVEN SISERA'S POSITION OF POWER AND HIS ARMY'S RECENT BATTLES WITH
THE ISRAELITES, HER ACTIONS COULD HAVE RESULTED IN SEVERE CONSEQUENCES IF THINGS DID NOT
UNFOLD AS SHE PLANNED.

• DECISIVENESS: WHEN THE OPPORTUNITY PRESENTED ITSELF, JAEL MADE A SWIFT AND DEFINITIVE
DECISION. SHE ACTED QUICKLY AND WITH RESOLVE TO KILL SISERA.

• RESOURCEFULNESS: USING A TENT PEG AND HAMMER—COMMON TOOLS AT HAND—JAEL EXECUTED

HER PLAN. THIS DEMONSTRATES HER ABILITY TO USE WHAT WAS AVAILABLE TO ACHIEVE HER GOALS.

• STRATEGY: JAEL USED HER HOSPITALITY TO DISARM SISERA, OFFERING HIM SHELTER AND A DRINK. THIS
TACTIC MADE SISERA COMFORTABLE AND UNSUSPECTING, ALLOWING HER TO CARRY OUT HER PLAN.

• DETERMINATION: SHE ENSURED THAT SISERA WOULD NOT ESCAPE NOR POSE ANY FURTHER THREAT TO
THE ISRAELITES.
PREPARING IN YOUR TENT
Life's "battles" are inevitable, but with preparation, we can navigate them with strength and grace, by:
• Self-awareness: Understanding yourself is the first step. Recognize your strengths, weaknesses, triggers,
and motivations. This insight allows you to play to your strengths and work on your weaknesses.
• Continuous Learning: Equip yourself with knowledge and skills. This doesn't only pertain to formal
education but also to learning from experiences, reading, workshops, and interactions with others.
• Physical Health: A healthy body can better support a healthy mind. Regular exercise, a balanced diet,
and adequate sleep can provide the stamina and health needed to face life's challenges
• Networking and Relationship Building: Your support system — family, friends, mentors, and
colleagues — will be your allies. Building strong, positive relationships can provide a cushion during
tough times.
• Set Clear Goals: Knowing what you want in different facets of life can give you direction. Regularly set,
evaluate, and adjust your goals.
• Develop a Growth Mindset: Believing that you can learn, adapt, and grow from experiences —
especially challenging ones — is essential. This perspective can change setbacks into opportunities for
growth.
• Seek Mentorship: Learning from those who've walked the path before you can provide invaluable
insights. Seek mentors who can guide, advise, and offer perspectives you might not have considered.
• Develop a Routine: Consistency in daily routines, especially those that involve self-care, can provide
stability amidst chaos.
