Key Information
• A monk takes 3 vows:
• Poverty: All money owned goes to the Monastery
• Chastity: No monk could marry
• Obedience: To obey (follow) the commands of the Abbot (the head of the Monastery)
• Day in the life of a Monk
• Began at midnight with the prayer of Matins
• Lauds- at 2 or 3 am
• Went to bed until daybreak, then went to Prime and had breakfast
• 8 am: Monks were given their duties
• 10 am: Monks went to High Mass, after which they had dinner
• Monks then worked, doing fishing, gardening
• Vespers
• 8pm- the last service of the day- Compline
A Monk’s Clothing

Habit: Simple robes made of rough cloth, it irritated


the skin- reminded people of Christ’s suffering
Tonsure: The monk’s hairstyle- represented the
Christ’s crown of thorns
Girdle: A simple belt which usually hangs the cross
Cowl: The Hood
Sandals: Reminded monks to be humble like Christ
