Abstract

• Aviation connects people, cultures, and businesses across every continent. It generates
economic growth, facilitates international trade, and promotes tourism.
• More than 1,300 airlines, that operate 31,717 aircraft at 3,759 airports.
• In 2016, airlines worldwide carried around 3.8 billion passengers annually with 7.1 trillion
revenue passenger kilometers (RPKs).
• Aviation provides the only rapid worldwide transportation network, which makes it essential
for global business.
• Global aviation industry reached USD2.7 trillion, some 3.5 percent of world’s gross
domestic product (GDP) in 2014.

2
Motivation

• I have always had an interest in the field of aviation technology and management.
• So, I decided to find a dataset related to the airline networks which can make us
understand the network of airlines and airports.
• This project represents the connections between flights considering the number of flights
departing and arriving from/at each airport.
• This project also depicts the busiest and the least busy airports in the Northeastern region
of the United states along with the most used equipment in the flights.
• Having done this project, I have gained a substantial knowledge about the airlines routes
and networks utilizing Gephi in the process.

3
About the Dataset
• The dataset I have been working on consists of 14 major airports from the Northeastern
region of the United States.
• This dataset has 9 attributes – Airline, Airline ID, Source Airport, Source Airport ID,
Destination, Destination ID, Codeshare, Stops, and Equipment.
• Among all these attributes I have worked on Source Airport, Destination, Codeshare, and
Equipment.
• I found the dataset from data.world.com
• The reference I used to download the dataset is:
https://data.world/tylerudite/airports-airlines-and-routes/workspace/file?filename=routes.csv

4
Nodes

• I have used the Destination Airports and

Source Airports as the Nodes.
• There are 14 nodes in total that are
connected to each other via edges.
• This project can help us understand the
most preferred airport to travel via in the
shortest time possible.

5
Edges

• There are 228 edges in this dataset.

• These 228 edges connect the 14 nodes.
• The edges determine the shortest path
between two non-connected airports.

6
Gephi representation of the nodes and
edges

7
Gephi representation of the nodes and
edges

• In this Gephi visualization, I

have highlighted the EWR
airport with the cursor to
visualize its connections to
other airports.
• Newark International Liberty
Airport (EWR) has the highest
number of connections to other
airports (11).
• This means that EWR has the
highest number of edges
compared to other airports.

8
Visual representation of codeshare
flights
• A codeshare flight is a way that airlines
can virtually fly to more destinations.
Essentially, a codeshare is an agreement
between airlines to sell seats on each
other’s flights. For doing so, the airlines
share the revenue on that ticket
according to the agreement.
• We can see that 43% of the total flights
are Codeshare flights and 57% of the
total flights are not Codeshare flights.

9
Visual representation of departures

• This bar chart can help us understand the

airports that have the most departures in
the Northeastern region of the United
States.
• As we can see, Boston Logan
International Airport (BOS) has the
highest number of departures.
• Atlantic City Airport (ACY) has the least
number of departures.

10
Visual representation of arrivals

• This bar chart represents most arrivals at

the airports.
• By looking at this bar chart we can
understand that Boston Logan
International Airport (BOS) has the
highest number of arrivals.
• Atlantic City Airport (ACY) has the least
number of departures.

11
Equipment Analysis

• This bar graph represents most common equipment used in the flights that fly between the
Northeastern region of the United States.
• By looking at this bar graph we can say that the E90 equipment is the most used
equipment among the flights

12
Conclusion

• Newark International Liberty Airport (EWR) has the highest number of connections to other
airports (11). Node EWR has the highest number of edges. We can conclude that most
people travelling from EWR to other airports have direct flights.
• 43% of the total flights are Codeshare flights.
• From Departure and Arrival bar graphs we can conclude that Boston Logan International
Airport (BOS) is the busiest airport as it has the highest arrivals and departures,
• On the other hand, Atlantic City Airport (ACY) is the least busy airport as it has the least
arrivals and departures.
• E90 equipment is the most used equipment among the flights.

13
Next step

• This research on the Airlines Routes Network gave us a lot of insights into the working of
the airline networks across the Northeastern region of the United States.
• If we can get the data on all the airports in the United States of America, we can take this
project to the next level and get more crucial insights.
• This project can also be done on an international level and if we get the distances and
coordinates of the airports, we can track the flights and figure out the best suited flights for
the travellers.
