CATCH-UP FRIDAY

02.23.2024
Mentally retarded people are classified by
the degree of their disability as mildly,
moderately, severely, or profoundly
retarded. In the past, many people with
mental retardation were hidden away at home
or placed in institutions that offered no
educational opportunities. Some were even
treated as criminals. Today, however, many
of them live and work within their
communities as productive citizens.

What makes a gift special? Everyone
loves presents, right? Receiving a
special gift is always a treat, but
sometimes giving a gift can be even
more rewarding. In the story “A
Crush,” simple but generous gifts bring
about positive changes for both the
recipients and the givers.
What is the most special gift you have ever received?

What is the most special gift you have ever given?

How does gift giving make you feel? Do gifts have to

cost a lot of money to be special?
The class will be divided into five groups.
Each group will read the story
simultaneously. The first reader will read
the first paragraph within his or her
group only, while others will read silently.
After the first reader read the
paragraph, it will be rolled to the next
reader until each member will take turn in
reading until the last paragraph.
How is Ernie different
from other people?
Using stick figures with labels
to represent the characters,
draw the scene in which Ernie
first gets crush on Dolores?
How does Jack help
Ernie at the end of the
story?
Seeing how things are related can help you
understand them. Events in a plot are often
related to each other by cause and effect.
Sometimes, an effect becomes the cause of
another event, and so on until the end of the
story. This is called a cause-and-effect
chain. As you read “A Crush,” record events
in a chain graphic organizer like the one
shown in your activity sheets.
