03 in literature
Who’s the
suspect?
• The class will be divided into two groups.
• There will be a set of mysteries flashed on the
screen.
• After reading it, each group member will discuss
among themselves to investigate what could be
the answer to the mystery provided.
• Each mystery will be given a minute for the
groups to solve.
CASE NO. 1

A man is found hanging in a room four feet off

the floor. There is nothing else in the room except
for a large puddle of water below him. The police do
not see anything the man would have climb to hang
himself.
Did he commit suicide and, if
so, how did he do it?
The man stood on a block of ice and put
the noose around his neck. Once the ice
melted, he hung himself, and all that was left
was a puddle of water on the floor.
CASE NO. 2
Mile killed his wife in front of a large
gathering. However, no one has the
power to claim him for murder and
imprison him for his crime.
How and why?
This is because Mile is a
hangman by profession. Apparently,
his wife has been sentenced to
death and he had to do it with his
own hands.
CASE NO. 3
A Japanese boat was stuck in water because of the
storm, and after the storm, the captain was found dead.
The engineer was busy fixing the signals, the cook was
managing the wine barrels, the wife went to the room,
and the maid was fixing the upside-down turned flag.
Who killed the captain?
The maid. A Japanese flag is the
same from all sides, with a red dot
in the center of a white
background.

that makes people interested in a
genre that
revolves around solving mystery
cases?
CRIME AS A GENRE
Crime fiction can span various subgenres,
including detective stories, legal thrillers,
psychological thrillers, and police procedurals.
Overall, crime fiction captivates readers with its
exploration of human nature, morality, and the
complexities of criminal behavior.
CRIME AS A GENRE
Crime has for decades been one of the most
commercially successful forms of popular
fiction. The problem that faces us when we attempt
to neatly define crime fiction is a familiar one when it
comes to discussing popular genres: the term
encompasses multiple sub-genres
and narrative strategies.
The crime genre encompasses fictional works
that revolve around criminal activities,
investigations, and the pursuit of justice. This
genre often features intricate plots, compelling
characters, and a focus on the resolution of a
crime.
In the mid to late nineteenth
century, novels grouped together
under the banner of so- called
‘Sensation Fiction’ often included
strong elements of the crime novel.
In the early to mid-twentieth
century, there emerged a number of
authors whose contributions to
detective fiction consolidated the
commercial popularity of the genre.
As Lee Horsley notes, the crime
writing tradition became steadily more
diverse throughout the twentieth century
(2010: 28)
In the United States, the archetype of the cynical, hard-bitten private
investigator became the basis for seminal novels by writers such as:
• Raymond Chandler,
• Dashiell Hammett
• Micky Spillane.

A new degree of psychological complexity and realism had begun

to emerge in the late 1940s and after, particularly in the work of authors
such as Dorothy B. Hughes, Jim Thompson, Patricia Highsmith and Ruth
Rendell.
