If Only / Wish

Statement
We can use I wish or if only to
express wish. If only is stronger
and more emphatic than wish.
 Function of If only / Wish
To talk about a present situation we would like to be
01 different. (Mengiginkan sebuah perubahan di masa sekarang.

To talk about something we would like to change about the

02 past. (Menginginkan sebuah perubahan di masa lalu a.k.a
penyesalan)
To show that we are annoyed with what someone or something
03 does or doesn't do. (Menginginkan seseorang untuk merubah
kebiasaan atau perilaku).

To show your desire that someone was able to do something.

04 (Menginginkan seseorang untuk bisa melakukan sesuatu).

Formula :
If only / wish + Simple Past

1. I wish you didn’t live so far away

2. If only we knew what to do
3. He wishes he gets a holiday
4. We all wish we had more money
5. If only I was taller, I might be better at basketball
 Pay attention

We can use were instead of was

1. If only I were taller, I might be better at basketball
We cannot use would in these sentences but we can use
could
1. I wish I could sing well

If only / wish + Past Perfect

1. They wish they hadn’t eaten so much noodle. They

are feeling very sick now
2. If only I’d studied harder when I was at school

merubah kebiasaan).
Formula :
If only / wish + would (not) + V1

1. I wish you wouldn’t borrow my clothes without asking

2. I wish it would rain. The garden needs some water
3. She whishes he’d not say the bad word to her.

melakukan sesuatu).

Formula :
Wish / if only + could + V1

1. I wish I could go with you to the movie

2. If only my mother could see me now
3. He wishes she could bring some medicine
