Changes To Matter
A change to matter can be
either physical or chemical. In
physical changes, substances
keep their identity. No new
matter is formed.
Tearing down a piece It is still PAPER!
of paper or folding it
in half will only
change the shape and
size of the paper NOT
THE PAPER ITSLEF.
In a physical change,
the kind of matter
stays the same.
Folding, tearing, and
cutting are all physical
changes..
Many objects are made of
one or more kinds of matter.
A fire hose contains rubber
and fabric. Cutting, bending,
and shaping these materials
to make the hose are all
physical changes. The
shapes and sizes of the
materials have changed, but
they are still the same
materials.
The big piece is a sponge. The
little piece is also a sponge.
The kind of matter stayed the
same. A physical change took
place.
