the Arusha peace accords,
but they ultimately failed to
end the violence.

On April 6, 1994, President Juvenal Habyarimana, a Hutu, was assassinated when his plane was shot down.

● Although the perpetrators were never definitively identified, many assumed it was the work of Tutsis.

● The assassination served as a catalyst, leading to a widespread eruption of violence against Tutsis and moderate Hutus.
