2 Different Cable Type

-UTP/ Unshielded
Twisted Pair
Cable

-STP/ Shielded
Twisted Pair
Cable
UTP – 4 pairs of color coded wires twisted

STP – Has a foil shield

that covers the wires.
Common types of twisted pair cables
that are used in a LAN are:

Straight (patch) Cable

-Both ends of a cable are wired using the
same standard.
-Connect dissimilar devices together.
Ex: (COM-HUB) (568A-568A)
Crossover Cable
-Both ends of a cable are wired using the 2
different standard. Ex: (568A-568B, 568B-
568A).
-Connects 2 similar devices together.
Ex: (COM-COM, HUB-HUB)
-Used local area cable.
Also have Twisted Pair Cable
Category.

The difference between these is the

maximum speed they can handle
without having any crosstalk
(interference).
SPEED
CAT 3 10 mbps
CAT 5 100 mbps
CAT 5e 1 gbps Enhanced
CAT 6 1 gbps 10 gbps (cable
length under
100m)
CAT 6a 10 gbps Augmented
CAT 7 10 gbps Added shielding
to the wires
CAT 8 40 gbps Distance up to 30
meters
The ultimate
copper cable
4 times faster
than Cat 6a/Cat 7
Mbps – megabits per second
Gbps – gigabits per second

The number represent the tightness of the twist that are

applied to the wire.
