TOPIC: Meaning and sources of History

OBJECTIVES:
By the end of the lesson you should be able to:
i. Explain the meaning of History
ii. Identify and explain the source of History
iii. Enumerate the importance of History
iv. Recall the term GARGLE
v. Discuss the motives of the big three.
Meaning of History:
History is from a Greek word ”Historia” meaning Inquiry or research.
History is the story of the past in order to understand the meaning and
dynamics of the relationship between cause and effect in the overall
development of human society.
Aristotle defined History as a systematic account of a set of natural
phenomena.
E.H Carn also defined history as an” unending dialogue between the past and
the present.
Sources of History:

Oral Tradition our ancestors left many things behind which serves as evidence to
know the past. Songs, folklore, proverbs old dairies newspaper etc.
Written Sources; Manuscript
Archeology; study of remains of building sculpture. They are like detectives and those
who study Archeology are called Archeologist.
Ethnography. It deals with the culture of people
Linguistics. The study of language in the society.
History ask the following questions
What?
Who?
Where?
Why?
How?
Importance of History:
1. It sheds light of the past upon the present
2. it helps us understand how and why we respond
to a particular problem in the past
3. it is inspirational
4. it makes an individual more rounded
5. it helps us learn from mistakes
6. it gives a group of people a sense of identity
7. it helps us understand our existence.
Conclusion:
History is the study of people, place and events.
Sources of History Oral tradition, Archeology,
Written, Linguistics and ethnography.
History is important because it sheds the light of the
past to the present.
