also equally popular.

Matador – The Measure of All Danish TV Dramas

Since the 1970s, TV Dramas have had the attention of the Danish audience. It started with Leif
Panduro (1923-1977) a Danish novelist, short story writer, and radio and television dramatist.
Neorealism. It was shown on Denmark’s national channel DR. – ONE CHANNEL!
In the end of the 1970s Matador was shown, and it has since has been used as the standard of
drama series – Thus, it was common for new drama series to be touted as the “New Matador” as
they are shown. However, not one has yet come up to the challenge of displacing it from its
honoured place in television entertainment.
This TV series was so successful that it got to enjoy repeated reruns, the first of which came out in
1984-85. The last rerun was shown in 2012-2013, but now it is constantly watched online. If
popularity is measured by the status of its viewers, andit was regularly viewed by Mary, Crown
Princess of Denmark.
Many foreigners wanting to learn more about Danish culture got important insight through the TV
series. The Danes’ love for coffee and newspaper was quite evident in the many scenes of the show.
If it is not able to depict Danish history in its truest form, viewers can take consolation in the offered
version as provided by a TV series accepted by the Danes as they get entertained.
Matador: plot, setting and characters
Matador was produced and shown between 1978 and 1982. It is set in the fictional
Danish town of Korsbæk between 1929 and 1947. It follows the lives of a range of
characters from across the social spectrum, focusing specifically on the rivalry
between the families of two businessmen: The banker Hans Christian Varnæs, an
established local worthy, and social climber Mads Skjern, who arrives in town as the
series opens. The name Matador was taken from the localised edition of the board
game Monopoly, also the series' tentative English title. In addition, in contemporary
Danish a "matador" is often used to describe a business tycoon, in the series referring
to the character of Mads Skjern and his craftiness as a self-made entrepreneur.
Directed by famed Danish film maker Erik Balling, Matador was the idea of author Lise
Nørgaard who wrote the bulk of the episodes alongside Karen Smith, Jens Louis
Petersen and Paul Hammerich. The series is one of the most well-known and popular
examples of Danish television and represents the peak of long-time development of
Danish TV drama by the public service channel Danmarks Radio.
The series has become part of the modern self-understanding of Danes, partly
because of its successful mix of melodrama and a distinct warm Danish humour in the
depiction of characters, which were portrayed by a wide range of the most popular
Danish actors at the time; but also not least because of its accurate portrayal of a
turbulent Denmark from around the start of the Great Depression and through Nazi
Germany's occupation of Denmark in World War II.

Matador “cultural proximity” and beyond
The majority of television scholars to contend that audiences prefer
media that are “most proximate or most directly relevant to them in
cultural and linguistic terms” And further, by implication, that the
“nation-based sense of distinctiveness” that viewers are said to
recognise in language, humour, people. But not only! We get back to
that.

1980s and 1990s
Since the late 1990s, Danish television has once again enjoyed
increasing success with a large number of drama series. Often aired
in primetime on Sunday evenings (8 o’clock), they have generally drawn
large audiences, talk of the week at work places. They received good
reviews, and several have earned and was shown in other Scandinavian

Different – but soon familiar!

More and more global e defined by simultaneity and reciprocity, the overarching argument of this chapter is that
globalisation – and with it the television sector’s advancing trans nationalisation – goes hand in hand with the quest
for authenticity and the appeal of local specificity. “Authenticity” plays in the transnational appeal of Danish and
other subtitled television drama series in the UK.
y the local specificity contributing to the appeal, rather than diminishing it. The notion of place, which implies
authenticity, appeals most strongly in a globalising world. At the same time, representations of unfamiliar yet highly
specific places, in spatial as well as temporal terms, appear particularly authentic. Moreover, I propose that the
effects of “seriality” and of how our brains process what we see on screen generate immersion, and with this,
feelings of familiarity and perceptions of authenticity. In short, local specificity, seriality, and the cognitive and
affective processes that determine our television experience are all intricately linked to notions of authenticity; and
authenticity is an important contributory factor in the transnational appeal of recent Danish television series.

Wefare reflectd in the Series
1) Big gender equality in these series, among the protagonist partners; the social division
of labour is significantly seen and is considerably different than many countries. Another
example is also, in most crime series, female detectives are shown stereotypically ‘weak’,
but the situation is completely other way around in Danish crime series. Both Sarah Lund
(from Forbrydelsen) and Saga Norén (from Bron / Broen) are very strong characters.

2) Furthermore, other dimensions regarding the Danish society such as architecture, city
planning, solving social problems are also reflected in the series. In my opinion, series are
also one of the most efficient ways to get to know about Danish society in general. Some
of them become such a cult that, they even become a question of Danish citizenship test.

3) Interaction between classes, the flat, Scandinavian society

Rita
“Rita” is a Danish comedy-drama starring Mille Dinesen in the title role as an
unconventional secondary school teacher.
Blunt and forthright Rita Madsen, a dysfunctional single mother, is beloved by her
students but doesn’t fare as well navigating the adult relationships in her life.
A bit politically incorrect, often raunchy, but always human, Rita is an endlessly
interesting and multi-faceted fierce female character. Well-written and darkly funny
with an amusing cast of supporting roles that carry you through 5 seasons.
Originally airing on Danish TV2 in 2012, the final season premiered on Netflix this June
2020. Well worth tackling the subtitles for a bit of authentic Danish humour.
