Photochemistry
Introduction:
Photochemistry is the study of chemical reactions that
may occur under the influence of visible or ultraviolet
light (200 nm to 800 nm).
Example : Photosynthesis (Process of converting light
energy into food energy).

When radiation hits a molecule,
it has following probabilities.
1) Scattering (no chemical interaction)
2) Absorption.

Photochemical reactions
Chemical reactions which take place by the absorption
of UV/Visible radiation are called photochemical
reactions
All photochemical reactions take place in two steps,
1) Primary process
2) Secondary process
Primary process :
Here, the reacting molecules are excited by absorption of light.
Secondary Process :
Here, the excited molecules undergo a photochemical change.
Example, Reaction between Hydrogen & Chlorine
Cl2 + hν 2Cl* (Primary process)
H2 + Cl* HCl + H* (Secondary process)
