MACBETH
Three witches tell macbeth that he is destined to
become the king of Scotland. Motivated by his wife
Lady Macbeth, he kills the king, becomes the new
king, and out of fear and paranoia he kills more
people. His actions result in the eruption of a civil
war which eventually leads to his death at the hands
of Macduff

OT • According to Aristotle Plot is the “soul of tragedy” and therefore it is
the first and foremost element of tragedy.
• Plot is the arrangement of incidents to create a serious impression on
the reader, author and character.
• The plot of Macbeth revolves around the themes of destiny, ambition
and power.
• Plot has three divisions – a) Proper Beginning
b) Proper Middle
c) Proper End
• The play has a clear beginning, middle, and end, with a rising action
leading to a turning point and a tragic downfall.

OT BEGINNING – ACT I
• Act 1 sets the stage for the play and introduces the main
characters.
• The encounter with the witches and their prophecies occurs in Act
1, Scene 3.
• Macbeth's initial doubts and eventual belief in the witches'
prophecies are established.
• Macbeth is named the Thane of Cawdor by King Duncan, setting
his ambition in motion.

OT MIDDLE – ACT II to IV
• Macbeth and Lady Macbeth plot and carry out the murder of King
Duncan in Act 2.

CHARACTER
CHARACTER DESCRIPTION
The protagonist of the play, initially a brave and loyal Scottish general,
Macbeth whose ambition and desire for power lead him to commit regicide and
descend into tyranny and madness.

Macbeth's ambitious wife, who persuades him to kill King Duncan in order to

by guilt and descends into madness.
