ARTS AND CRAFTS OF NON-MUSLIM
MINDANAO
Mindanao is home to a number of different
cultural groups and communities. While a greater
part of the region of Mindanao mostly consist of
Muslim people, a certain percentage of the
population is also composed of non-Muslim
inhabitants.
These inhabitants commonly belong to non-
Muslim ethnic groups.

WOOD CARVING
Similar to the sculpture from Muslim Mindanao, the
people from the region of non-Muslim Mindanao also
feature okir patterns and designs in some of their
sculpture.

They are special okir patterns and designs crafted
especially from men and women.
WEAVING
Among the most beautiful traditional cloth from
this region is the T’nalak made by the people of Tiboli
from the region of Lake Sebu in South Cotobato.
This traditional cloth is made from the fibers of
abaca plant. Tiboli people cannot create a design that is
not revealed to them in their freams. Dream weavers.
WEAVING
One well-known Tiboli artist from lake
Sebu, South Cotobato is Lang Dulay. She is
known as a traditional weaver of T’nalak in
her region. Because of her exemplary skill, she
was awarded Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan
in 1998.
ACCESSORY MAKING

Among these accessories are:


Angkul – sash made of thick cloth worn by the
datu to signify the mark of authority.
Kayab – a piece of a cloth worn like a turban
on the head.

Kubul – an inch-thick wooden ear plugs.
Hilot t’noyong – dangling hawk bells that jingle as
the wearer walks.
Blonso brass bracelets worn as a set of 15 – 20
pieces of bracelets in each arm.
I’ mimot – huge necklace that covers the entire
neck and chest area.
METAL CRAFTING
Metal crafting refers to the process of creating
objects from metal through the process of
brass casting and blacksmithing. The art of
brass casting was said to have originated in the
island of Sulu during the fifteenth century.
