ACADEMIC WRITING

What is writing?
Writing is a medium of human
communication that involves the
representation of a language with
written symbols.
Writing shows how our minds
and even our emotions being
creative and resourceful of the
ideas we wanted to present.
Academic Writing
•Academic writing uses words which are
formal, standard and impersonal.
•It is clear, concise, focused, structured and
backed up by evidence.
•Examples:
Persuasive Essays,
Informative Essays,
Research Papers

•Its purpose is to aid readers
understanding.
•It has a formal tone and style but it is
not complex does not require the use of
long sentences and complicated
vocabulary.
•Its objective is to inform rather than

•Academic writing is to some extent:
complex, objective, specific, concise,
and formal.
•It uses language precisely and
accurately.

Features of
Academic Writing
1. Complex
• Written language is relatively more complex
than spoken language.
• Written language has longer words, it is
lexically denser and it has a more varied
vocabulary.
• Written texts are shorter and the language has
more grammatical complexity.
2. Objective
• Written language is in general objective rather than
personal.
• The main emphasis should be on the information
that you want to give and the arguments you want
to make, rather than you.
Don't write:" In my opinion, this a very interesting
study."
Write: "This is a very interesting study."
3. Specific
•In academic writing, facts,
information, dates and figures are
given precisely.
•Do not use "a lot of people" when
you can say "50 million people".
4. Concise
•Academic writing should be
concise.
•You should use no more words than
necessary to convey your meaning
clearly.
5. Formal
•Academic writing is relatively
formal.
•You should avoid colloquial
words and expressions.

Avoid the following:
a. colloquial words and expressions; ""stuff", "a lot
of", "thing", "sort of",
b. abbreviated forms: "can't", "doesn't", "shouldn't"
c. two-word verbs: "put off", "bring up"
d. sub-headings, numbering and bullet-points in
formal essays - but use them in reports.
e. asking questions.
5. Formal
• We use question tags a lot when we are talking to
each other but they are not appropriate in formal
written language. In formal situations, we need to
structure questions in a different way.
 You’ve submitted the project, haven’t you?
(Informal)
 Have you submitted the project? (Formal)

Tips in Writing an Application Letter

1. Be Concise.
• State the purpose of your formal letter in the
first paragraph and don't veer from the
subject.
• Try to avoid flowery language or long words.
• Keep the letter short and to the point.

2. Use an appropriate tone.


• A business or formal letter should be written in a tone
that is slightly more formal than your everyday
language.
• Avoid the following: slang or jargon; contractions
such as I'm, can't, it's; and vague words such as good
and nice.
• Be polite and respectful.

3. Proofread
• Once you have written your formal letter, check the
grammar and spelling carefully.
• Re-read the letter.
• Check for the correct spelling of words (use the
dictionary, google or spellchecker in your computer)
• Check the grammar and punctuation for correctness and
make sure the sentences are complete.

4. Use proper format and presentation.


• Use high-quality paper and a matching envelope
for your formal letter.
• Make sure the recipient is addressed properly and
that his or her name is spelled correctly.
• Equally important—don't forget to sign the
letter!

crew in a food chain.
• Observe all the rules and parts in
writing.
